We use an artificial tree and we have not had any problem with the dogs. It is the cats that get into mischief!
I used to put a playpen around the Christmas tree to stop the kids from destroying it when they were babies and toddlers. Works well for animals as well. Sheild it in some way behind a see through barrier. Good Luck.
Oops- I posted my thoughts on this in the general discussion. In short- my plan is to protect the tree with a fire place guard. Our tree is in a corner, with the couch bordering one side so all we have to do is put the screen across the front. Hopefully this'll work.
Wow, what a timely post. I've been thinking that Sammie (5 mos) is just gonna love something new like the Christmas tree. I'm a bit nervous, in fact. I have visions of him chewing on the light strings and ripping open all the presents - he loves paper. I'm thinking a small fence might be a good idea, but what kind? It would have to be somewhat decorative so as not to spoil the look of the tree. Sounds like a great craft idea for some clever person!
Oh yeah, we did this once when my kids were 2 & 1. Great idea!
We have an artificial tree and Ein doesnt usually bother it. However, the tree usually goes in the corner of our dining room in front of the windows. This happens to be one of Ein's favorite look out points as she follows me from window to window as I head to my car to go to work in the morning. So, she sometimes wants to get behind the tree to hop up and look out the windows. But we let her take part in decorating the tree. She gets to sniff the ornaments and all the branches and lights. She never had an issue with chewing on the light strings thankfully. She just used to love to chew on the tree skirt (which would rock the tree a bit) when we were using her blanket as a makeshift substitute.
We use an artificial tree so maybe that helps but the corgis have never bothered the tree. The cats like to get after anything on the lower branches but mostly they sleep under it. I keep the breakable stuff up high.
We have an artificial tree. Kirby has never bothered it. He does like laying on the skirt though. The first year we had a velvet purple skirt that we threw out because there was so much hair on it. I've added one of my favorite holiday pictures of him. :)

That photo is adorable! :D
Must have more Christmas pictures of cute Kirby and his Christmas tree napping!!!!!!!
