he later adds in updates, that the gene for short tail although well established, he finds will not breed true, so further study would need he thinks a "better tail gene""

heres an excerpt and apparently the kennel club to which he refers is British ?

WHAT ELSE

Clearly another problem, were the exercise ever to have any practical value, would be the Kennel Club's view on the registration of these dogs. Entry to the KC Breed Register seemed possible under Regulation B.2c of the KC Regulations for Classification and Registration (page 3.21 of the 1997/1998 Yearbook). This concerns dogs of impure, or unverified breeding. I put the case for registration to the Kennel Club together with a copy of my original letter to Martin Sinnatt and a copy of his positive reply. I also provided all the details on the successive generations of crosses, including the photographic evidence, and the fact that blood samples for DNA analysis had been collected at each generation. After much time and no doubt much discussion I was advised that the case had been approved. I then had to register each generation from the first cross through to the last and this I did with the help and advice of Brian Leonard.

The registrations are now with me. They show the early generations as crossbreds and this last, the fourth generation, as Boxers.

So they can now be formally exhibited at shows and in fact the 8 months old bitch illustrated in Fig 4 did compete at a recent Midland Boxer Club event. She did not get placed, but it was a tough class of 20 odd minor puppies. More importantly, however, no one noted anything atypical about her appearance or temperament. She performed in the ring without special attention other than from those in the know. It will be nice if the bob-tail pups from the recent litters can finish up looking as good."

http://www.steynmere.com/ARTICLES1.html this is the first part of the report and I guess its a gut not a gal:) oops
anyway thisnk if i read it right she bred back almost immediately to the Boxers,, and for a couple generations and somehow got them registerable.. fun to read.....
ya vicky I thought are you kidding?? boxer and corgi??? hahahahah But there was an intended purpose.. not to create a mixed breed, but.. read the article .. this guy went on to spend something like ten years at this.. and none of his champion boxers carry the slightest resemblance to the corgi ... bizarre but interesting... LOL

Do some digging about Dalmations. They carry some sort of weird thing that is in almost all the breed. A guy, many many moons ago, breed in a pointer--which is one of the original breeds used to make the Dal. Then took noncarrier pups and bred back to the dals, kept non carrier and so forth. 13-16 generations later, non carriers, 99% purebred and you can't tell the difference from the 100% dals of today. But they can't register them, though they don't carry what ever deadly thing it is.

oh wonderful. 2 wound-up goof-ball breeds bred together! something i would love to read about. hopefully you can find the articule. and, yes, it's good when friends can disagree and remain friends. like i said, i lost my friend because i didn't test jack for DM before breeding and she's too closed minded to hear me say nobody knew about this before i used him. i really have learned years ago that close-minded people have no room in my life. i'm always willing to learn new. it's like being a sponge at times, but i also have a right to my feelings and opinions and i know i'm right , sometimes. but, if i'm wrong, i will be the first to admit it.

WInddial!! KUDOS .. I love these discussions and there is so much we can all learn by sharing stuff here it is great. And I hear opinions not so much as differing but informative!!! You bring up a great point we are so civilized :))) Best friends arent really made by always agreeing with one another.. who the hell learns from being yessed all the time.. hahahah thats what my mother always said.. that and preface each statement with " but I could be wrong"" HAHAHAHAHA The idea here is to stimulate discussion the more we share the more we learn:)))))
Vicky, I agree, I wouldnt let a dog suffer either.. Just hope U of MO keeps studying this "orphan disease" and they learn more about it..
not to get far afield, but has anyone read the report about the boxer gal who for reasons of not liking docking tails, conducted a breeding experiment for about ten years , to reintroduce a natural short tail back into her boxer line??
She teamed up with someone in England I believe, and bred a boxer to are you ready , a corgi( PEM) I will try to find the story again, and post a link to it. Facinating stuff...... she kept a detailed log and records , and actually got the AKC to register the boxers with natural tails after back breeding . hybrid to boxer again. I was fascinated by this .... She has photos of all the progenty and the first litter was comical.. but she wasnt breeding for a "designer breed" she was breeding for a genetic trait.. the natural short tail... she toyed with continuing to try for erect ears... as boxers are ear cropped as well , but not sure if she got anywhere with that.. She also before each subsequent breeding, lists in her report ahead of time hypothesis and expected outcomes of the mating.. interesting to follow along and see actual results compared to expected.... You have to read the report she published , or may be tempted to think ??boxer/corgi???? lol she lovingly called the first generations "borgis" for purposes of the project.. all were homed in loving homes and made available for breeding in the study.. amazing stuff.. I was fascinated.... and let me throw this out... even tho after back breeding there is no discernable outwardly visible trait left of the corgi, who knows but some other good trait from the corgi that survived that will benefit future boxers??
