Vicky, I am sure that there are many with the experience you have in the ring with similar horror stories.. but american judges are being heavily criticized by fanciers and clubs around the world... maybe it is time for them to stand up and make some adjustments??? I think in a perfect world the best judges would be those that actually have experience in breeding the breed they judge, but not only that- but those that have successfully MENTORED and positively influenced and taught those new to the breed what they have learned over their experience!!
and for us who exhibit.. we have to get over being :kennel blind" thinking we are the only ones who could possibly have a quality dog.. does nothing for the breed. and there are way too many of them out there!! Huge somes go to prof handlers in an attempt to WIN! The only time handling should be judged in a ring is when all dogs are exceptional in all other respects , and then should the eay they are handled come into play.. we cant all be prof handlers but we can learn as we go along how to best present a quality dog! But the dog should be judged first and foremost and judges should be able to evaluate a quality dog and maybe amongst the cream of the crop of dogs, maybe becasue of good handling the dog gaits better or is showing the best of those quallities.. or has been presented in better condition .... but again judges need to be able to put the proper weight on these things !We exhibing need to SHARE good and bad, be honest, and have integrity and welcome new ones to encourage and when they do well and help when it goes wrong... anyone new coming in today needs to be very critical of who they make associations with, that they are there as much for their welfare and success as their own!! showing dogs is a sport but an expensive one. dog shows are a business! we pay a huge some for paying judges to have the expertise to judge accurately and fairly!! elsewise we who support this sport are wasting our money!!!!

well ... Cindy.. people need a mirror before they put labels.. I was brought up even in horses that if bitch( or mare) in season, you are respectful and try not to let it affect the others showing as much as possible so kudos to you for taking the right and respectful care of a bitch in season...any of these people ever hear of do unto others?? if it was their dog and a bitch standing up his butt the whole time ?? and judges are way to subjective and even the seasoned judges need to brush up skills and standard..And NE had problems with Select points too.. Think the AKC rep had lots of visitors at this show....and maybe akc needs to brush up their judges and clubs need to take more care in selecting AB judges according to breed??
I for one want not jsut to win but to be JUDGED against the breed standard... the dog to be judged as a whole according to or against what is the ideal as written in the standard... that can be in a ring of many who approach that standard and then choices have to be made according to how presented, conditioning etc best movement on the day all else being equal and judging would be far more consistent, but I observe judging in our breed to be all over the place and and more confusion with the new GR CH points..... people we should not be having to "show to particular judges" who like a particular thing!! It should be a new exam each time in the ring.. which dog on that day exemplifies the nearest to ideal for that breed... this is not supposed to be dog against dog! It is suppoded to be every dog judged against a standard , and judge should be able to correctly evaluate in any ring those dogs that approach the best of that ideal and and award that dog that comes closest to the ideal ! Not closest to what they happen to like.... no perfect dog! some think they have perfect.. so more important for judges to be OBJECTIVE and know the small nuances of the breed standard! what to fault when to fault and even what is excusable from the ring! what is the appropriate weight to put on a particular fault etc.. all dogs have faults!...It is all in the individual standard for particular breed! If they cant do this then we waste money and could all just get together and judge our own ! silly and seems getting worse....
and sportmanship?? If I am even close to realistic, then I know I am not and probably infrequently going to be the animal in the ring that day that most closely approaches an IDEAL SO.. there are bound to be days when there is a better example of that standard in any given assortment of dogs! SO if judges are consistent.. and not blind, I say this game means LET THE BEST DOG ON THE DAY WIN and CONGRATULATIONS!!! ARRGGGG I enjoy showing ditto Cindy meeting people having dog examined, learning what and where I need to change to better etc... but I consistently spend all or most of my time at shows by myself with my dog to avoid being a part of all the sniping and trash talking of others.. who I might add may have been really sweet till you show up with a dog in their breed...LOLOLThere ARE exceptions, I have been fortunate enough to meet some!! Most in this group know just what I mean:) so well guess maybe we will have to stand together and set the example for the many who cant seem to play fair or have any kind of integrity!
thats my soap box for today!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

i know what you mean. that's why when new people want to start in this sport, i'm stright across the table with them about the crap that happens. a lot of people don't like that but i don't care. years ago i was showing a bulldog bitch that was in full heat at the denver show weekend. we stayed in the corner with her little panties on and actually had been told that we SHOULDN"T of come with her being in heat like that. i just told them that she wasn't in the obeidence ring and dropped it. needles to say, that was exactly our 13th show and gabby went on to win her first points and went best of winners. like you said, these stupid assinine games will be found no matter which venue you show at. these people have no clcass and are they ones that really try to ruin it for the rest of us. but, the best thing we can do is 1. don't show under those judges again and 2. ignore the jerks. your day will come and just pity them for being so small in their thinking and actions. it's sad when judges screw up badly and that's not just on the placings. i showed an irish wolfhound, yrs. ago. it was a bitch and at this one show, there were only bitches entered. we were first in the ring. did our thing, went around the ring and then set up fofr the judge to go over her. all was fine until he checked to see if she had "two of them". she tucked her butt in a little, but maintained. needless to say, we didn't do anything that day. so, to this day, i actually encourage owners of females, that if they are going to show, get your bitch use to having that area checked. one never knows if the judge is paying attention or not when dogs are called into the ring. later

Congrats on the wins! Wish we had opted to go south rather then north this weekend. I will openly congratulate those that won in Sioux Falls-any win is a great win. But I am seriously upset with the ethics of a few people we showed with this weekend. I won't go farther then that. I went knowing I didn't really stand a chance-rePete was in standing heat and Frank was totally warpped by it. I was polite and stood off in a corner with her so that I didn't bother anyone else but it seems I was being "snotty". Judging, IMHO was inconsitent and all three judges had issues with placings, GRCH/Select points and even knowing a dog from a bitch. It was pitful. The games played by a few this weekend also, were uncalled for.

I love showing. I love meeting up with friends and having fun. We don't win all the time and that's perfectly fine with me. I just hate the attitudes and ethics I keep running into. It's in any organization-UKC, AKC, 4-H, what ever. Shame the way people behave in order to "win".

What a weekend! Went to the Lakeshore Pembroke Welsh Corgi specialty and Taz got his first two legs on his AKC Rally title and 2 3rd places. Then went to the Davenport UKC show. Tobi finished his UKC Championship in style going BOB over Champions out of the classes to take a Group 2 in the first show and a Group 1 in the second show. Then to top it off he got a BEST IN SHOW on the second show! And on top of that the judge turned to the crowd and told the audience that this dog is the epidome of the standard and that she screamed pick me from when he walked in the breed ring. She started to educated the crowd on breed standard and said that a lot of people discount this breed for having cocked out feet but it is on supposed to have the straight front of a Pembroke and they are to have a longer body and he had wonderful flowing lines and georgeous movement. I am still on cloud nine! Going out with a 100 point win! WOW!
