Well, I would have to add that legitimate breeders and puppy mills are NOT the same thing! I don't think most good breeders are in the business to make money. They charge what they do to cover their expenses, which are many. And by the way, I am not a breeder! Good breeders know about genetics, have their dogs tested, and try to improve the breed--and provide their customers with healthy, well-socialized pups.

I have both the male & female corgi that I have breed twice. She had small litters and I had the vet check the puppies before they were sold. My puppies were part of the family and all are healthy and went to loving homes. Just ask Spartan how happy he is. After all the recent puppy mill stories I wouldn't want a puppy that was caged since birth. Don't think for a moment that any breeder breaks even on the sale, they are in business to make money or they wouldn't do it.

$350 will get you a backyard bred dog. Good breeders break even on the sale of a puppy, have strict standards for the home the dog will go to, and charge more because they put more money and time into genetic testing, healthcare, and hand raising.

sorry, I am willing to pay, by cheap I meant around $350, but I guess people wouldn't price that low.

My previous corgi was a papered corgi obtained from a rescue. The donation I made to the corgi rescue was a lot less than I would have paid to a backyard breeder, and I knew more about the dog's health than I would have with a BYB.

Make sure that your puppy comes from a breeder that checks hips (OFA), eyes (CERF), and for VWD (Pembrokes) or PRA (Cardigans)! If they can't show you the documents as proof and don't show you the parents, walk away! It is not worth it no matter how much cheeper the puppies are. You can also check out the OFA and CERF websites and look up the parents yourself.

Yes look into rescues, we found Kendal in a rescue when he was six months old, in 3 years however have not seen a similar add since. We do have his papers and actually found a sibling through this site.

I couldn't agree more. We got our first two corgis from people who raised horses and just had puppies for sale. They both have cost us huge amounts of $ in vet bills. After my sweet little Buffy died at 6 from liver disease(after about 3 years of vet bills..hip dysplasia, various liver problems etc) and Sparty had severe allergys we went to a reputable breeder. We paid a little more but she is just as sweet and the only vet bills are her normal checkups. If you are going the "unknown" route you should rescue.

Baylee,

Cheap puppies come from backyard breeders and aren't screened properly. You may get a cheap puppy and then pay dearly later in vet bills for hip or eye problems. Or pay with heartbreak if something worse is wrong. It's not worth it, plus why encourage backyard breeders by giving them money?

Try www.petfinder.org - that's where my dogs have always come from. Or possibly a local corgi rescue?
