So every night when Kiwi gets in her crate to go "sleepy time" (as my husband and I call it), she lays down and just starts scratching at the corners and sides of her crate. It doesn't bother us, and we always laugh b/c she sounds like she's so intent on getting somewhere, in fact, we've dubbed her the "Shawshank Dog." Anybody know what this incessant digging and scratching is about? Is it to tire them out? Or, are they really trying to get somewhere? It normally lasts between 10-15 minutes and then she stops and goes to sleep. Just wondering if anybody had heard anything about this. Thanks!

Haha...it seems like everyone's dog does it. I used to think it's to make them more comfortable...until Mei started digging at humans too...that was painful. It could be she's trying to fulfill some of her digging desires. Dogs do enjoy that =)

Mochi also does this! especially when its hot, i'm guessing to get to the plastic part. Also she does this when i put in new bedding.. its like she needs to mark the pillow with her sent. She will also dig on her big pillow bed thing that's not in her crate... It's really wierd. ha ha. She digs and digs until the fuzzy on the bed will be spread all over the room.

Mine doe it at night to scrunch up their blankets. They both take a good five to ten mintues of rolling around and josting for position to sleep. Which is funny to me because I could fit three more corgis in there and they would all sleep comfortably.

Might be digging instinct...my corgis love to dig...they would did through the earth if left unattended...the crate has a pad in it...seems like they they watn to dig through it. Cruise just digs...but he is only 4mos old...Tiki (18 months) digs and loves to bury...digging in either the yard, under the pad in the crate (when she used to use a crate), and under the sheets of the bed. She even lifts oup the corner of rugs to hide stuff under them.

Mocha does that every night! He does it with our carpet, pillow, pad, crate...etc. I simply take it as his way of "fluffing the pillow" :)

it could be a nesting thing, trying to get plastic more comfy? scout doesnt really do that but he licks the door and the inside of his kennel for a good hour when he is in it and bored...then he falls asleep.

There is no good odor in his crate (and i dont think any bad odors either - which translates into good odors for dogs lol) ! He just does it.. maybe he is trying to get on the plastic... but you would think dogs like the comfy-ness of some padding - guess not? Its been cold too!

Um...besides her smell, there's nothing else in there, she does it mainly in the back corners of the crate. However, it's really good to know there are other pups out there who do it too!

Skittles does it too! When she does it, though, she usually paws her mat out of the way and lays directly on the plastic; so perhaps it's to stay cool?

She also does that when there's a particularly good scent around as well. She got her "green" flea medicine the other day (which smells more like cloves than anything else), rolled around, and then pawed FURIOUSLY where she rolled. Is there a good odor in the crate?

bailey does this! i dont know if hes trying to "mark" his scent on the crate pad.. or what! but yes its a ritual (probably no more than 2 minutes though - i guess he figures he's not going to China like he wanted) for bailey every night before he finally settles down. I always ask bailey "what are you doing you crazy bunny butt". and umm.. he doesn't respond. Just looks at me. =P hahhaha
