This past Saturday, 6-14-08, I picked up a very large 2 1/2 yr old sable male for fosterage. There apparently was an issue with a neighbor tormenting the dog and then calling in noise complaints and viscious animal complaints. The owners missed the court appearance date and were forced to give him away by default.
Scrappy could be a good boy. He's never had to be, never been taught how, but he has it in him. He can be aggressive with humans - he's snapped at me several times when he was uncomfortable with my approach, my foot nudging him away from the door, or my hand reaching for his collar- but he's very good with my other 3. He's forgotten himself a few times and started playing with me, running, chasing, frapping around my chair. Then something shifts and he goes to a corner by the front door and just hunkers down to keep an eye on me.
He's been badly spoiled, which has added to his aptitude for using his teeth to disagree with a given situation. He's close to 60 lbs, begs at the table, and would prefer not to eat dog food. He walks fine on a leash as long as there is a correction collar or slip-lead in use. The former owners only used a harness, and he pulled like a sled-dog.
The home that takes him in will have to be up for some serious challenges. It's going to take awhile to get through to this guy, but I'm convinced that there is nothing but warm corgi love under that gruff exterior.
Unfortunately, the So Cal Corgi Rescue will not be able to work with him due to liability issues. He will be turned over to BARK (Basic Alliance for the Rescue of K9s) this Sunday so their trainers can work with him on his issues and match him in an appropriate home.
