I always wondered why some dogs dont chew their dog food. Just wondering if anyone has any explanation for this.
Does anyone have a dog that doesnt chew their food! It just seems like it would be better for them to chew it, or does it not matter. Is it because the kibble is so small they feel no need to chew it? I find it interesting that our dog loves to chew toys but not his food!

They don't chew, they inhale. I timed Molly and Tigger a few days ago. Molly ate her food in 3 seconds...Tigger gets a little more, it took him 7 seconds.

Only a few days ago I posted my problem on my blog - Risa doesn't chew either. He definitely needs to chew, because his lower jaw isn't wide enough. Our vet simply recommended a kibble with bigger pieces.

Couple of things that might help: First, you can hand-feed the kibble a bit at a time. That's pretty good at slowing them down. Second, consider a bowl that keeps them from scarfing food. http://brake-fast.net is a good site. Their bowls are designed so that your dog has to go around the obstacles to get to the food, thus making it difficult to simply inhale kibble. And it's better for them to eat slowly.

Yeah... Lily and Izzie chow down on the food. I think Izzie does it because she wants to try and get at Lily's food if she isn't done yet. The first week Izzie came home, Lily was extra fast because she wanted to get at the puppy food thinking she was missing out. But then the next week Lily was feeling sick and wasn't eating as fast so Izzie was trying to get at Lily's food. But now that Lily is feeling better, she's defending her food more so I don't really have to kick the puppy away from Lily's bowl. :) Before the puppy came, Lily always ate fast like she hadn't eaten in days, I don't know why! She's a petite girl (only 21-23lbs usually) so we don't feed her a lot (only what's recommended) since she kinda lounges around all day :-p

When your eating fast there's no time to chew! People do it also.

haha i think its better if they chew it.. but, i think dogs don't chew cause they are SUPER hungry and/or just LOVE the food they're being fed. Bailey chews his kibble - but a treat is swallowed in a sec (and sometimes its bigger than kibble size!). If they like it more, they'll eat it faster (unless their that smart they actually know its better to savor it than gulf it down).
