A New Addition... (yes, we're insane)...

We have a new addition to the family: Cody the BHT. Cody is 13 years old. His owner came to PetSmart yesterday and said she was looking for a home for him and she didn't want to "mess with him anymore." All of her answers to questions about him were curt and without emotion. After I got over being shocked and wanting to punch her lights out, I told her we'd take him. She brought him back to the store within about a half hour. He was filthy, had a nasty collar on, and a knotted up chain around him. He's been shaved mostly because she had thrown him out in the yard. He's lame in his back end, knees don't bend much, and his hips are obviously sore. He's got cataracts in both eyes and is hard of hearing. Patti will take him to work tomorrow to have him checked for heartworms and get his shots (which she failed to keep up). He's intact, but there seems to be an issue with one testicle, which we'll have checked, as well.

Even though he's 13 and has the usual old-doggie health problems, he's just precious! He has a wonderful, sweet nature and gets along great with the other dogs and cats. He loves people. We took him to PetSmart today to get him a nice bed and some glucosamine tabs and all my co-workers said he looked so much happier than yesterday! That made me feel good. There's a new girl in the Banfield vet who sat on the floor with me and Cody yesterday and just cried at how he looked and how unhappy he seemed. She was thrilled with him today, as were our friends with the animal shelter (who were in doing an adoption day).

So, after a good warm bath, ear cleaning and getting to know his new brothers and sisters, he seems to be adjusting very well to his new home. I know we're suckers. I readily admit it. But who wouldn't take this sweet boy in considering his age, health and home situation?!!!

Sigh. I need a raise.

Cindi, I did a similar thing. A friend I run with called me saying he had an "emergency" situation and wondered if I could help. Turned out his daughter had a one year old Pem she'd bought at a pet store because he was cute. Unfortunately they hadn't done any research about the breed and he was totally the wrong dog for them. They had no yard, weren't a particularly active family and had a small child. Her boyfriend told her "the dog has go to, NOW" and so I got the call. I took in Teddy. She really didn't want to get rid of him but faced with the choice, the dog had to go. Teddy is such a sweet little guy, but typical Pem. High energy, nippy, smart and loving. But I'm determined to find him a good home. If I keep him, I won't be able to foster anymore. He'll make someone a fabulous agility dog because he's fast, fast, fast! I'll find him a place I'm sure. We're going to an agility trial this weekend and I'm going to start asking around.

Cody, if you look on my profile page, is the one kind of hunkered down on the floor. He's tri-color, so he's not easy to miss.

I'm so glad you decided to keep him. His original owner kept him filthy and didn't take care of him. He has a much better home now!!! By the way, which one is Cody??

Glad to hear that his vet appt. went as well as it did. You know he was meant to be with all of you--things just happen that way. Looking forward to seeing a picture.

I'm at Store 0634 in Mobile, AL. Patti took Wild Bill Cody to work today. Apart from her vet-boss being concerned about how many doggies we have... Cody checked out okay! No heartworms, no heart murmur. Arthritis in the hind end and some cataracts...but otherwise, he's amazingly healthy considering his age!

I gotta tell you, I really wanted to smack her. I didn't think PetSmart would approve, especially since I was in my work uniform! :-) Self control takes practice...lots and lots of practice. (sigh)
