Thanks, y'all. :)
@ John, you mean I used a pun appropriately and didn't even know it?! I wan't aware of that use of the word in the Royal Navy (and I just now realized that cur (dog) + tail = curtail). Very cool. (wouldn't work for a docked Pem though)
Comment by John Wolff on March 17, 2011 at 2:04pm You are aware, presumably, of the "curtail" pun?
I believe it was it was a traditional pun ikn the Royal Navy about why the Dog Watch is called the Dog Watch (it was split into two abbreviated half-length 2-hr. watches, 1st Dog Watch & 2nd Dog Watch, so each watch could alternately mess for dinner).
"Why is it called the Dog Watch?"
"Because it is curtailed."
Ships had a whole menagerie of animal jargon: cat, horse, dog, mouse, pigtail, worm, rat, fish...

Comment by Anna Morelli on March 17, 2011 at 11:35am Loved the photo and poem. I had fun modifying it a bit to fit my Cardi and sent it to my friends:
Here have we a Corgi from Wales
the kind that is bred with long tail
he's brindle and white
and quite the delight
to celebrate he never fails!
I'll be looking for a suitable green tie for him later today. Thanks for the laugh....
