A Request of Wisdom from the Masses

A few more puppy questions, regarding Milo, our 9-week old Pembroke.

Things have been going remarkably well lately, as he is starting to lighten up on the biting and paper training is moving along faster than I ever would have imagined. But here's my first question: what's up with his breath? He's partially on Nature's Recipe Puppy and partially on his original dog food, which was called Black Gold. I never heard of it, so we're trying to wean him off it slowly. I know dogs typically do not have good breath, dog breath doesn't bother me really. But I'm curious to find out if there is something else there because, quite honestly, his breath smells like stale urine. I have never had a dog whose breath smelled that way. I mean when he licks my hands I have to go wash them because of how it makes them smell. Also, is flatulence something common among Corgis, or will he grow out of that (fingers crossed)?

Next question is going to be asked to the vet as well, but I thought I'd look for tips here first. He chews obsessively at his hind legs, specifically at the inside of the knee. More on his right than his left, but still he chews hard enough he actually made himself whimper last night. Normally I know you don't really bother a dog if they have an itch, but even to the point where he starts hurting himself?

Thanks in advance, everyone.

Now I've been sniffing my guys' mouths and trying to decide what they smell like. It's pretty bad. I have to get some new doggie toothbrushes and toothpaste. I'm surprised there's no doggie floss (or is there, and have I missed it??)

He has been in for his first visit, and has another appointment soon. Will let the community know what it turns out to be, so I can hope to contribute some new knowledge. Fingers crossed that its just plain bad breath!

My corgi Bertie was the first dog I'd had in many many years, so I have to say, I spoke to my vet a lot. A good vet understands the new puppy owner's fears and can help educate you and make sure the puppy is healthy (since you've only had him a week, have you had your "new puppy" check up yet?). Urine smelling breath is not good -- I would call the vet or bring your little guy in, just for your own reassurance. And do let us know what you learn or figure out!

@Sarah C. - We bought all new toys when we got him, and have only had him for a week, so I doubt any toys have gone stale or anything yet. We have not introduced him to anything like rawhide yet, either. But thanks for your suggestion and I did just check the smell of all his toys, just to make sure.

Not my dog, but when I came in contact with several puppies, their breath smelled like skunk. When I first came to the US, and didn't know what skunk smelled like, I called the smell "puppy breath" because that was the closest smell to it. I've only smelled in puppies, but no all the puppies. My dog never had it, but now, she's having teeth issues, and have bad breath. :( I recommend to have vet look at both issues. :)

Or it might be an older stale chew he's getting into, for that matter.

Are you feeding him bully sticks? Those give mine rank breath for hours and smell a little like skanky pee. :3

"doggy fart, warms my heart" My pup has the stinky toots too. Bad breath only occasionally, but never like urine....I mean... if he had a build up of uric acid in his system, would it come out in his breath? maybe kidney troubles.

Ein has had doggy breath for a little bit at times more recently but he really never had any bad or doggy breath so I can't help with that. If he is chewing obsessively in one spot then I've always assumed that there is something else going on besides the occasional itch. I would definitely take him to the vets to check for fleas and mange.
