So my poor little corgi boy had to be shaved yesterday...as in, completely shaved! I feel so bad for him....it's basically just adding insult to injury. As anyone who's read my other blog posts knows, Daxter has been struggling greatly with his skin allergies for the last 3 months or so...this is the worst allergic reaction I've ever seen on him. He even got so bad, that he got skin infections. I tried everything from putting socks on his feet to switching his food, to giving him prednisone....nothing seemed to help. We had started out just shaving his worst itch areas so that I could apply topical medication, but now he's got scabs and sores and bruises all over his body from his insessant scratching. So....by-by beautiful fur, hello shaved pink blob. His coat was actually pretty healthy, it's his skin that is unhealthy.....i have to bathe him every couple days and apply medicated rinse all over his body.....my poor boy...he knows he looks ridiculous...and the worst part is, i don't really want to take him to work with me until his hair grows back...i work at a doggie daycare, and he likes to greet customers at the front door of the lobby, but I don't really want to explain over and over again to my clients why my dog, who should never, ever be shaved, now looks like a little pink piggy......I guess the good thing about the whole situatuion is that I can now see very clearly where his worst areas are, and I can take care of his skin before it becomes inflamed and infected....i just wish my vet could've come up with another solution....yes i've got him on high quality foods (Acana Pacifica and Primal Raw), and on several herbal and omega supplements (this dog eats better than I do), but nothing seems to make a difference (however, i can't even imagine what he would look/feel like if i had him on a grocery store brand!!!). I think all i can do right now is keep up with the topical medications, and make sure his skin stays clean and try to keep him from scratching.....i can't wait until his hair grows back, hopefully he won't look too patchy.....poor little guy....The pic I attatched is when we had just his worst itchy spots shaved, you can see how red his chest is and the skin on his sides have turned a dark gray and gotten hard from continuous scratching.....he is now completely shaved....

This also will sound a bit silly, but the numbing cream that is used to premedicate prior to laser hair removal and pediatric blood draws may work. I occasionally get insanely itchy patches on my wrists and neck, and that cream numbs the skin so I don't notice. I don't have any right now, but I think the peds version is called "Emla cream" or something similar. Good luck; that picture breaks my heart. Poor little guy.

i have tried Alpha-Keri oil, and it works great at keeping his skin hydrated! now that he's shaved the oil doesn't just sit on his fur and has a chance to soak in nicely.

i have tried numerous food trials, and i have concluded that he is allergic to chicken/eggs....but i think what we're dealing with right now is mostly environmental. many of my clients have been having the same problems right now, even dogs that don't normally have skin allergies, have been reacting to whatever is in the air right now. He's always been the most reactive this time of year (August-September) and i believe that ragweed may be the culprit. i have looked ino allergy testing, but there are not many vets in my area that do it, and my regular vet told me that if i decide to go ahead and do allergy testing, he has to be off of his prednisone for two weeks prior to the actual testing...not something i want to do at the moment, with him being so miserable, i still want the pred. to be an option in giving him quick relief....i've sorta reached a brick wall i think...

I know that this might sound crazy....But I have been suffering with similar eczema/dermatitis like symptoms...Two patches on my elbows. It has been smoking hot here and it flaired it up. My husband looked at my sad elbows one night and said...."you should put an aitifungal cream on that and see if will clear it up" of course I had been using hydorcrodozone cream...taking my allergy meds attempting to do all of the right things...But I digress, the anti fungal cream worked. You can buy it has walmart I am embarrassed to say in the area where Jock Itch and athlete foots products are...YUCK..But if it worked for me maybe your baby could get some relief as well. It honestly has worked wonders for me almost completely clearing my flair up! Just wanted to let ya know!! Good Luck.

Awww, poor guy! I'm sorry, I haven't read all the allergy threads simply because I've never dealt with animals with allergies and therefore have little to add, but has he been tested to see what he's allergic to?

If you can find the summer issue of Bark magazine, it had a good issue where the culprit turned out to be a version of the plant Spiderwort.

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry to hear the update on Daxter. Eczema is bad enough in humans let alone in our canine companions. I was going to suggest adding omega 3 supplements and everything else you mentioned so you're been extremely proactive in trying to get him back in the right direction. I'm sure he really appreciates all of your attempts in making him feel more comfortable. Are you sure he doesn't have a specific food allergy? That may be causing it. I sure hope he gets better soon, give him a good hug from us!
