Last night was rough. My corgi pup was spayed yesterday, and it caused her A LOT of discomfort. I gave her as much pain meds as I was allowed, but every little move or twitch caused her to shriek loudly or whine. So of course she was waking herself up (and me) every time she'd try to reposition herself in her dozing off stage. She was also having trouble moving around inside her crate with her cone on. So I made the bold move of letting her sleep all night outside her crate, on her soft little dog bed on the floor next to my bed. She's not house trained and I keep the bedroom door closed anyway, so I just put out some puppy pads I had left over and hoped for the best. She immediately calmed down, cause I draped my arm over the side of the bed and petted and comforted her to sleep. She ended up getting up around 3am and used the puppy pads for #1 and then crawled back in her bed and went back to sleep. Then around 5:30am she whined and pawed at my bed to be let up and sleep with me, so I indulged her and let her up. She let me sleep-in til 8am when she woke me up with 100 puppy kisses and a cheery wagging nubbin. I could have used more sleep, but all in all the night went better than expected with all the fuss she was making all evening. All day today I have been stressed out about what to do with her tonight. She is much better, but I was concerned that she would still have trouble in her crate with the cone, and even worse that she'd fuss and whine to be let out and sleep like she did last night. I am happy to report that after switching her crate with our dachshund's crate (which is a smidg bigger) she went right in without a fuss at all and went straight to sleep. What a huge relief! Now it's time for me to get some sleep. Good night everyone!

Eventually she will have a soft bed on the floor next to my side of the bed, but as long as she's chewing and isn't house trained she'll be crated at night. Our dachshund was crated til he was almost 2 yrs old. We trust him to be out and wandering the house at night now. Sometimes I hear him getting a drink of water or going out the doggy door in the middle of the night.

When Franklin got neutered that marked the start of him sleeping out of  his crate and on my bed! :-) He was just so miserable in his crate with the blow up collar so I let him sleep on my bed and we never went back to the crate again haha. I plan to be a little more strict with my new puppy....we will see how that goes though.

The first night was a rough night and I probably babied Noodles longer than necessary. Since he really couldn't fit in his crate with the cone on, he was allowed to sleep draped acrossed my tummy for the week he had to wear the cone. He was able to position himself comfortably over my tummy with the cone on in order to fall asleep. He refused to lay his head down while he was wearing the cone, so the poor guy didn't get much sleep unless he was in bed, laying across my stomach and snuggling with his mom and dad. I felt so bad for him, so of course I let him do whatever made him comfortable.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Ein slept very well last night, so we both got some much needed sleep. She has a lot more spunk today, and if she didn't have to wear to wear that cone she might be her normal self, but it's throwing off her game. LOL

Ray - Because her cone is so loose, she can reach to lick her unmentionable area, but not the incision, and she has been licking down there more than she ever has. I think part of it may being itching from the hair growing back in, either way I'm keeping an eye on her and the area to make sure it doesn't get irritated. So I know if I took the cone off she'd be licking down there, and now that she's comfortable with it I'm just gonna leave her be.

Elizabether - Ein loves the safety of her crate too, and goes in there to nap at times. She usually acts anxious when I have her on the bed with me at night, which is why I had her sleep on a dog bed on the floor next to me. She seemed a lot more comfortable with that arrangement, and who am I to complain about not having to worry about rolling onto a puppy in the middle of the night. I was relieved that we found a solution and were able to crate her again the very next night, cause we both slept a lot better. I was just afraid she would get too comfortable on that dog bed next to me, but that wasn't the case.

Well, she just settled down for her morning nap, and I have to head out to meet a girlfriend for brunch. Have a great day everyone.

Usually its only the first night that has a lot of pain.  Try taking the cone off while you can keep an eye on her.  If she leaves the incision alone, you can pretty much dispense with the cone.

The first night home after spaying and neutering our pups were not happy, but the next day they were almost as if nothing had happened!  I hope today is a better day for all!

That's wonderful; hope last night was uneventful for you. We had to put Jon in our bed (he's a crate sleeper) for a week because of the cone.  Last night he finally went back in the crate (w/o the cone) and all of us are better rested.  I could tell he was anxious being out of the "safe" quarters of his crate at night; he's such a creature of habit.

You are a good "mommy" and I hope she feels better soon!

Aw, I hope the little one feels better soon! Rowdy still has a few more weeks before his neuter, I'm probably going to spoil and baby him :)
