Sky is going to start Agility classes this week! I am so excited and I know he would be too if he understood. Has anyone ever done agility before? Any stories or suggestions?

Actually, Sky is my Aussie (I know this is a Corgi site, but Sky is big brother to my Corgi, and I just had to share my excitement with people who would understand!). The really fun part is that there are only three other dogs enrolled in the class and two of them are Aussies. I am looking forward to bonding with some other Aussie owners about their dogs and how they train them. Yay!
Oh you will have the time of your life! Most corgis just love it and this increases the bond with you and your dog more than you will ever know. There are so many ground exercises you can do that will be so helpful while doing agility. You would do well to see if you can find someone who currently competes with corgis as there are some differences in the training. Make sure you do not do the weight bearing obstacles too frequently. These are pretty tough on the dog. Keep your dog at a very good weight. A heavy dog does have a more dfficult time and will really stress their bones and joints. Save a super special treat just for training and give at no other time. Play games while you practice at home. Most of all keep it fun, never scold for a mistake and always stay upbeat. You will have the time of your life!

Fun! We've been doing Agility for about half a year now and we love it. Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions, but the best advice I can give you is to start slow, practice often, and have lots of fun! Several 5-minute practice sessions are much better than one long one. Try to end practices on a good note, before Sky is getting too tired/bored. It can be frustrating at first, but once he understands what to do, I'm sure you'll love it.

I have no suggestions -- but I took Bertie, who's 5, to beginner classes this summer and he had a blast! He would get so excited as we approached the field and could not wait to run all the obstacles. He did everything with little explanation (all for treats), including running through the collapsed tunnel and up and down narrow walkways when a lot of the other dogs balked. He also was one of the few who could to everything off leash (it pays to have such a food driven dog sometimes). We are going back to Advanced Beginner as soon as I can free up the time. Enjoy! And bring someone with a camera to get action shots.
