Sidney loves to chew at night right before bedtime. I give him raw beef bones, marrow or knuckle. His teeth are so shiny clean! I've also heard good things about Himalayan Dog chews. It's basically VERY hard cheese made from yak milk. He likes it, and has barely made a dent in the thing. I found it at Pet People, and also seen it on Amazon.
Good point on the Everlasting Treat Ball (thats the name :D). I never thought about them not being able to get their back molars around them. I was considering purchasing one, but now think I will just stick with the treat balls and antlers.
I got Snickers an Everlasting Treat Ball recently. The refill treats are not cheap and I am, so I just let her gnaw on it for a little while and put it away for later. The first one had a treat installed on both sides and she had them both gone in about an hour. It seems to just work the front teeth, though, they can't get the back molars on it. I'll have to try antler, that sounds like something she would like.
I think it is Kong that puts out the balls with a hard treat in the center. Neverending Treat Ball? I think that is the name, or something similar, I will have to go look. We have a couple of balls that we can put treats in to keep the dogs busy. But for just chewing, he loves the antlers, he will throw them around and bark at them...silly dog (makes me laugh every time though).
All my dogs have had rawhides every day. The only time I had trouble was when I found that the rawhide bones distracted Lilliput from the thunderstorm. So I gave her about 4 or 5 during the night. Oops. She promptly vomited them all, outside in the thunderstorm.
They have them only in our presence, not in their crates. The chips are gone in just a few minutes, no time to get slimy and become a nuisance. It calms them very well. No tummy trouble. Sometimes get stuck on their teeth and need rescuing :)
Antlers are great, but not as interesting or exciting. Bones are questionable since Lilliput has mysteriously lost a few teeth without any gum disease or trauma. Nylabones are out for the same reason.
In the beginning, with my beagle puppy, I reasoned that a rawhide bone a day was alot cheaper than a pair of shoes a day!
When I got Solomon I did not know that he had a tricky tummy. I took him to the vet because he had bad diarherra and was vomiting. He told me that rawhides were bad for them, because they can not digest them properly and they were empty calories. No more rawhides for him. I knew he needed something to chew so I listened to everyone on here and got him beef bones that he could chew but not at. He LOVES them. And as a added bonus he teeth are as white as snow, The vet said that he has no tartar on his teeth. Bonus for me not nasty cleanup!!!!
For me personally rawhide is not always a good thing. My Alaskan Malamute cross (he was 13 when he left this earth), would eat them, then be sick all night. So with Cooper I switched to antlers. They last quite a bit longer and I don't have to worry about him getting sick.
Rawhides are dangerous, i found that out last nite. I don't give them to my dogs, by gracie snuck one from my neighbors yard. She was throwing up for about an hour before this huge piece of rawhide came out along with blood. Very scary, thats why i don't give rawhides. I like the antlers to, just ordered some for christmas for the dogs. Also bully sticks are good, expensive tho. Kongs are great to, with peanut butter inside.
Be careful with the Nylabones. If they really like to crank down on them like mine did they can break their teeth. Raw hides should only be allowed while you can supervise due to possible choking. I like cow bones but they can be messy. Kongs with kibble or peanut butter or cheese are safest.
I've always been told that rawhides aren't the best, as they can be dangerous, but I know lots of people that buy them for their pets and have never had a problem. Personally, I prefer using Kongs, Nylabones, deer/elk antlers and Healthy Edibles (though the Edibles are more of a treat than a chew, since the dogs devour them in seconds, hehe.)
