I know this seems like a trivial post, but I want to purchase a second crate for Tilly, 27 lbs, that I can take to our cottage this summer. I will be using the one we have as well, but using the second one for inside of our tent.  At the moment I have a large metal one with a slide out bottom.  She really doesn't need this much space but she can do anything in it, lots of room.  I saw a crate today, and hemmed and hawed as to whether she would fit in there or not.  I decided not.  I'd like to put her in to see, but they don't let you do that.  Should I buy a medium one?  And if someone actually has a brand and measurements that would work that would be great.  I think the dogs length causes problems for me at least, deciding what size would work.  Also has anyone used a soft sided crate before, and do they work, or do they tip over?

Ruby had (and still possesses) a big-dog crate donated by my son, who used it for his (large) golden retriever. This wire-sided and wire-topped domicile came with an extra wire "wall" that you can snap inside it, to  shrink down the size to fit a puppy. Then you can move it back as Pup grows larger and finally take it out when the little dog is big enough to last a few hours without a potty break.

Ruby loves it and still uses it as a refuge every now and again, even though most of the time she elbows Cassie out of the favorite Nest in the back bathroom. I haven't folded it up and put it away because Ruby still will go into it occasionally.

For a car carrier, we have a medium-sized plastic-sided crate with a swinging door in front and barred "windows" on the side near the top. She's not nuts about this but will tolerate it for short rides. Don't know that I'd put her in it overnight.

A corgi lying on their back with four limbs akimbo takes up a surprising amount of space!. Bella usually starts the night curled up in a neat ball, which does not require much space at all but as she uncurls and assumes what my husband calls the "Boogie nights" position, she fills a 30 inch x 18 inch crate.(height is somewhat irrelevant!!).

Dougal, who is a massive brute of a corgi, fills a similar metal crate. I did have a very handy soft crate with metal frame, which was ideal for vacations / travel, but the aforementioned brute quietly gnawed the plastic zipper- it was one of those classic situations where he was way too quiet, and when I checked him out, he looked at me with an expression of supreme innocence. It was only when I went to use the crate again that I noticed the methodically chewed zip.

I am very surprised that a pet store wouldn't let you try out the crate for size: maybe you should bring your custom elsewhere?

I use a soft crate all the time too. She has figured out how to unzip it tho so I have to clip the zippers shut when at trials and such. It's a medium size and plenty big, but I don't remember the brand. I've had it for years.

I also have a medium plastic sided crate for the car. It's medium size, has ventilation holes in the plastic both top and bottom, and the door opens both right and left, which can be very handy. I got it at Petco.

I use soft sided all the time for agility trials. Work fine for us.  We have NozToNoz n2-30  (30x21x23).  I got it at Sitstay.com.  Murray is 33# and a fairly long boy.
