DOG BREEDER FRIENDS....NEED SOME ADVICE

Hi everyone!

I have a friend whose dog is being put on the old chicken and rice diet. Vet says they must stay on it. My friend is concerned that this will not give her dog all he needs. Are there certain supplements that should be given on this limited diet to help maintain the dog's health???

Appreciate your help!

If your dog has an enzyme deficiency the best thing for that is Beef Liver ( Raw or Slightly Boiled). I also give my corgi a Raw Egg 2-3 times a week. Yogurt, Cottage Cheese and Canned Pumpkin (not pie filler) are great to add to the your dogs diet. Clancy also gets Molasses, Fruit, Garlic, Greens, Hamburger, Fish (Omegas), Chicken, Apple Cider Vinegar, Brewers Yeast, Bone Meal, Grains and Honey. We also have a stand by Kibble that we occasionally use when we have had an extra busy day. I have a book with natural suggestions to taking care of your dog and what to feed them and there are lots of sites on the web that also encourage a natural approach to Corgi Care. I always go there first when Clancy shows any signs of a change in his normal daily routine. If you are interested in a new way to care and/or feed your corgi, I think naturally is the way to go.

Are you referring to EPI?

From what she said, the dog has an enzyme deficiency. I'm sure the vet can have her pay a bundle for HIS supplements, but the cost is stupid. She just wants to make sure she's able to give him the nutrients he needs and can digest.

Is that just chicken and rice? or a limited ingredient dog food like California Natural that has only one protein source and one carbohydrate? My dog is on that because of crystals in the urine. When my Old Dog was on chicken/ground beef and rice for a couple weeks because of GI issues, he developed pica issues, eating toilet paper and other highly perfumed paper products. The vet said that was to be expected because of the limited diet. I think your friend may need to get some clarification from her vet.

I had to put my corgi on a bland diet for a while. Chicken breast, rice, plain yogurt, and cooked mashed sweet potatoes. He LOVED it, and for a long time I continued to mix yogurt into his dry food. Check with the vet to see if your friend can include those in the diet as well.

Do you know why the vet prescribe a diet in chicken and rice? Is the dog suffer from a certain kind of condition that requires a bland diet that don't upset the stomach? Is the dog on other kinds of medication? Supplements are not regulated and can often work with / against rx, ask the vet directly.
