I am assuming I am not the only person on this site a little addicted to dog training books. (something about having corgis will do that to you) I just read a book called "Don't Dump The Dog" by Randy Grim. It was a fun and informative read. I had to buy the book when I read a section where a lady wanted him to rehome her dog because it barked and he asked if she had been under the assumption that dogs meowed!!
So I was wondering if anyone has favorites they would like to recommend. I particularly enjoyed Patricia O'Connells "The Under End of The Leash".

Animal Planet used to run Dr. McConnell's show and I loved it but that was a few years ago. I was really sorry they took it off. I don't think we get the radio show here. Her web site is dogsbestfriendtraining.com

I loved the books by Patricia McConnel "the other end of the leashe" and "for the love of a dog". I also have read "The well adjusted dog" by Dr. Nicholas Dodman. another favorite is Turrig Nagossy and of course ceasar milan. I find little gems of info. in all of these books and try to be as educated and well rounded as possible in behavoir modification styles since I don't believe in psyical punishment (no alpha rolling for me).

If it's about how a dog thinks, then I may want to check that one out too! I try my best to put myself in my dogs' shoes when I am dealing with different situations. Sometimes I succeed, other times not. I got myself snarled at once when I failed to grasp how alarming it is for a leashed dog (mine) to have a loose dog approaching him when he is holding a coveted object. Totally my mistake, and had I thought like my dog I would have avoided the confrontation.

Which end is the under end? Seriously, though, anything by that author, Patricia McConnel. Her dog training school is out here, and her radio show on Wis. Public Radio. The books are generally short, and deal with a specific issue, such as the shy dog, multiple dogs, etc. "The Other End of the Leash" is about how your dog is thinking differently from you.

I should never do anything in a hurry! The book is "The Other End of the Leash" LOL I don't really have a training issue, I just like to read.

I haven't read many training books lately. The "Don't Dump the Dog" one sounds great; I might need to check it out. I enjoy watching The Dog Whisperer and It's Me or the Dog.

When I'm having a training issue, I like going online; you can compare a host of different training styles and tips, take what you like from each and discard the rest. I'm a bit of a browser when it comes to training styles.

I have not heard of either book but both of them sound like great reads. I will have to check them out.

Hi Bev,

I don't have any recommendations for a specific dog training book but if you like books like this you might like "The Whole Dog Journal" this is a monthly newsletter with all kinds of tips from training to food to medical issues.
