I was reading the news feeds today, the information junky that I am and I came across an article saying that pets are feeling the economic pinch too.
I can certainly relate, I had to postpone my cat getting her tooth extracted because things were getting a little hard pressed. When it comes between my mom getting a root canal and the cat getting a tooth yanked out, mom wins, hands down, and that's unfortunate.
The article said that people were missing appointments, not filling prescriptions, opting out of surgeries, sad stuff all around.
But then I got around down the list to this article out of the AP. It reads, in short, that Petsmart is reporting growth. I'm not an economy person and I don't claim to be, but I think it's wierd if more people are paying for pet services and pet toys.
It might be that it makes grooming more available, since instead of finding a groom, they have one right there in the strip mall that you go to next to the michael's and the Kroger's.
Still, seems odd to me.

Also I imagine chew toys are cheaper than say... a new leather couch; which would definitely be the case if i cut back on them

To certain extent I can understand why Petsmart is reporting growth...one I HATE Petco (apologies to anyone who may work there, but ordering online and the stores in my area are very bad) so I shop exclusively at Petsmart, and two: it's much more economical for me to stop splurging on myself, than to stop replacing chew toys as needed or switch to less healthy food for Caleb. Caleb will continue to get wellness food and training treats, and new chew toys when he finished disemboweling the old ones. He relies on me, and doesn't understand the concept of a crappy economy, so I will continue to cut back in all other areas first.

DISCLAIMER: I am thankful in that I haven't had to make a human loved one vs. corgi loved one choice...yet.

Wyatt gets all the toys in the world, all the bones too. He is one spoiled brat. His health is always on my mind, if he needs to go, he goes, if there is something wrong with him, he gets it fixed.

This economic pinch in surely affecting us too. Can't really splurge for toys or accessories now, but when it comes to our dog's health - it's something we gotta do...

I can say, working for PetSmart, that some of our services areas are experiencing a slow down: grooming, training, vet services, etc. However, the rest of the store is booming. Folks aren't curtailing their buying of toys and treats. The one difference is the number of owners who feed premium dog/cat foods who are looking for cheaper food. And for the most part, once they see the benefits of healthy food vs. paying for vet bills, they see the value and stay with the healthier food. But, even PetSmart is suffering economically. What they don't say in articles on the subject is how over budget many pet supply stores are. Costs have risen tremendously over the past couple of years. And I know at our store, we only in the past few months started to see real increases in cost of products. But, it all boils down to true animal lovers will always sacrifice for their fur-kids! (Us included!)

Maybe that's it. Though I must admit, when I can't splurge on myself, I splurge on my dog.

Very interesting! I exclusively shop Petsmart (too many bad experiences at Petco), but I've definitely cut back on the amount of toys I buy for my dogs. I find their prices for pet accessories are pretty high compared to somewhere like Target. Now that you mention it, I really only buy food and bones for my dogs now! Even my Furminator was purchased on Craig's List....

Maybe people who were previously buying from boutiques are downscaling to a chain store? Maybe???
