First Puppy Play Date...and I Can Fly Now!

Yesterday, Isabella met my brother's yellow lab, Daisy and my parents' long-haired dachshund, Sophie. Both of them are 8-9 years old and already know each other. They both came over (at the same time!) to meet Isabella. Isabella did great! She and Daisy had a blast! It was so fun seeing her play with the "big dog". Daisy was really gentle and I think had great fun playing with a puppy. Sophie, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with it! She wasn't socialized with other dogs as a pup and pretty much hid behind my parents. She was happy, her tail was wagging the whole time, but she didn't really know what to do. Whenever Daisy and Sophie are together, they pretty much just do their own thing. Isabella really wanted to play with Sophie and had fun herding her around the house! Hopefully Sophie will warm up to playing with her...All-in-all, the first doggy play date was a success!

On another note, this weekend Isabella learned how to jump up on the couch. This all happened with no encouragement...she just hopped right up. Nothing is safe now! We really try to monitor her activity because I do not want her jumping down and hurting herself. Sometimes she just flies right off, no warning. Not much I can do about that, but we try to not let her jump down. Now that she knows how to jump up, she thinks this is where she belongs. Every morning Isabella has about 15-20 minutes downstairs by herself (gated with access to kitchen and living room -- a large tiled area). One of my last blog posts I reported the damage she did by ripping up mail and bolting through the screen door...Now, today, when I get downstairs, guess where I find her? On the kitchen counter!!! She must have hopped from the loveseat to the counter. She was just sitting there looking all sweet and innocent while the cat was looking up at her. I freaked! Of course, she got frisky when she sensed my fear for her. She got up and started to move. I got to her before she could run or jump off (I'd hope she'd be smart enough not to fly off the counter, but who knows?). Just as I get to her I see she is eating something. Knowing she was busted, she opened her mouth right up and I pulled out a fully wrapped, soggy, grape Jolly Rancher candy. Yum! Everything else was in tact as far as I could tell. Thank goodness I found her when I did! It could have been much worse, I'm sure. Time to rearrange the furniture...

Thanks, Rebecca. Yes, the vet "released" her to socialize 2 weeks after her last set of shots. We were really a few days early per him...I KNOW I could have taken her to puppy class. I also know, I'm WAY overprotective and that's the reason I haven't started until now. Now, she'll go everywhere she can with us! Dogs and other people galore!

o wow what a clever girl! on the counter?! o my goodness i am happy she is ok lol thats pretty cool she gets up on the couch all by her self but i am happy to hear she is being monitored. teddy is going to be a year old this month and just started jumping on the couch. weird i know lol she did pretty good for a 1st encounter but i would really start socializing her to other dogs. there is only a small window time frame to socialize her to strangers, kids(the big one) and other dogs. if u can i would take her places so people can meet her and when she does give her a treat so she thinks kids/dogs=treat. set up some doggy play dates:) by the way she really is pretty and cant wait to see what she looks like when she gets older

She'll be 19 weeks tomorrow. The arm of the love seat isn't really that far away from the counter the way it is set up, but it seems far enough for little-miss-short-legs! I guess not! I'm thankfull she made it safely. She could have easily slipped...Even though she can jump up on the furniture now, sometimes it takes her a few tries. We'll have to rearrange tonight, for sure. This weekend I put some of the sofa pillows on the floor in front so she could get down safely...No, she flew off the edge diagonally and landed in the middle of the fireplace hearth. Wow, is right! I don't know what flyball is, but I'll have to check it out! We were thinking of starting agility when she's old enough... :o)

Wow! How old is Isabella now? Maybe you should try flyball with her when she's skeletally mature. :) Only one of my cardis (the fluff) will jump up on furniture, and thank goodness he can't reach the counters because he'd be on them, too (and my cats would be ticked). Go glad you caught the Jolly Rancher before it went down.
