Teeth

At what age did your corgi have his/her first teeth cleaning with the vet? Ein is almost 7 months old and she has build up on her far back teeth. I attempt to brush her teeth, but I just can't get those back ones. She hates getting her teeth brushed so she wiggles and clamps down and makes it impossible. Our dog trainer told us that allowing her to chew a compressed rawhide for 2 hours once a week will help, but I just don't see it making a difference. I really didn't want to have to start the cleanings quite this early.

Any advice?

Heather

P.S. Her teeth on the other side are a little worse than this side.

Have you tried giving her different types of chews maybe? I buy the curly bullysticks, pig ears and cow esophagus (gross I know) from www.bestbullysticks.com, Supposedly they are very good for cleaning teeth. I've also heard of people having success with the product PlaqueOff but I've never tried it myself. Henry is almost two and he has a tiny bit of tartar on one of his back teeth but that's it.

Sid is almost 4. His teeth are really clean. He gets Dentastix on occasion and he also gets the large milkbone-type biscuits from Costco (split in half) as a treat. I've never brushed a dog's teeth.

Our 16 year old lab/dane also has never had a cleaning or his teeth brushed. The vet says his teeth are really in good shape.

On the other hand, we adopted Bruce when he was 10. Right before we adopted him, they gave him a dental cleaning and pulled 6 teeth. Three years later, he needed another dental and had 4 more teeth removed. His teeth still have tartar but he's holding on. He's 17 now!
