For some reason lately I've been wanting to dote on the dogs more than usual and have had urges to give them some of my table scraps. In the past I've always been strict about not giving them any people food and sticking with minimal amounts of dog treats. I don't know what's come over me all of the sudden, but I felt like I needed an outlet. So I did a quick search and found these 2 articles: 10 “People” Foods for Dogs and 10 More "People" Food for Dogs. When I was at Sprouts today I picked up some green beans, squash, canned organic pumpkin puree, and grabbed a couple extra apples than usual. This afternoon I steamed all the green beans (without salt or seasonings), and had some for a snack myself and handed a few out to the pups. It felt so naughty. I know my husband wouldn't be pleased if he knew I was just handing out food. He's strict about all snacks being put in their bowls, so they sit by their bowls to beg instead of sitting in front of us drooling for some hand outs. It feels so good to be bad sometimes though.
I also took a can of the pumpkin puree (which was the consistency of baby food) and portioned it out into these little 3/4oz plastic soufflé cups (ice cube sized) and put them in the freezer. They froze up nicely and are now in a freezer bag. They'll be nice little frozen treats for a hot day... or any day. My dogs LOVE ice cubes, so they'll probably love these. Ein had fun licking out the can which is something else I never let the dogs do.
Over all, it was a blissfully sinful day, just not when it came to their health and nutrition. I'll always try to do what's best for my dogs, but you gotta let your hair down sometimes too.

Your "people" food handouts are hardly sinful! I can think of much worse (bacon and beer maybe). It's fun to watch them enjoy some extra goodness now and then. JF and Dewi get googly-eyed over orange sections, of all things. Heaven help them when I bring out the yogurt and pumpkin. :)
It's all good in moderation!
I read a very easy to follow guideline… If you wouldn’t give it to your frail grandmother…don’t give it to your dog.
I let my girl have small amounts of lean meats… and vegetables. (Vegetables…that I know to be safe for dogs.)
I do cut back on her dog food a bit to compensate.
Don’t worry…healthy food choices once in a while won’t heart them.
Hah! Mine are soooo spoiled. I buy them tinned sardines and salmon. I buy they plain unflavored yogurt and reduced fat cottage cheese. And canned pumpkin and green beans. I think this summer I might start saving the "squished" blueberries--- the bad-looking but non-moldy ones--- and freeze them to add to their food. They sometimes get banana too.
In summer, I will get a container of plain yogurt, a mashed banana, a tablespoon or two of peanut butter, and mash it all up in a bowl. I portion it out in an icecube tray and freeze them, then they get one each when they come home from a walk. Everything I give them is good for them. Personally I'd rather by a mid-price kibble and add in "real" food than pay for the top-of-the-line kibble.
It is because the corgis use "the power of their minds" to overcome us. :o).
