.I just stumbled on this movie - I had heard the story and read about the statue, but wow.
I am not a crier - and I'm still blowing my nose an hour later.
God love the puppies!!

We saw it a few years ago. It was wonderful and is based on a true story. Bring your kleenx!

They loyalty and love of dogs can be amazing.
I was touched by the cameo appearance of the Military Working Dog Pat in Karl Marlantes' Vietnam combat novel Matterhorn. He succinctly paints the bond between dog and handler -- knowing that the dog could not be transferred to another handler, and would be killed when he rotated home, Pat's handler had extended his combat tour twice -- it is fiction, but I think the author tried hard to get it right, and was not exaggerating.

My eyes are your eyes to watch and protect you and yours.
My ears are your ears to hear and detect evil minds in the dark.
My nose is your nose to scent the invader of your domain.
And so you may live, my life is your life.

The other side of the coin is the evil abuse of innocent dogs' loyalty for brutal purposes. The SS used dogs, too.
You can tell a lot about people by how they treat, and use, their animals. A dog is like a mirror, reflecting the ugly and the beautiful.
I have this fantasy: if there ever is a Judgement Day, St. Peter and the Recording Angel consult the animals whose lives we've touched. Ew.
Awhhh I just looked it up and it looks amazing and SO SAD.
