Our  younger Corgi who has never been very healthy, surviving an auto immune disease in her early years, now 7, blew up like a balloon with fluid in her belly , the vet couldnt see anything on xrays all a grey blur, they put her on meds to bring down swelling and pass fluids (somewhat uncontrollably), and to treat possible underlying infection, dropping from 42 lbs to 36 in 5 days
It was enough for the vet to do an ultrasound... Found nothing good. Liver heart and lungs all clear, but area behind her liver, stomach, spleen , pancreas... all blurred and unidentifiable. Options , exploratory surgery which could find either every thing is just inflamed and could be made worse by surgery, A tumor encompassing the area that cant be removed and they dont even wake her up or a tumor they can remove with then some hope of recovery. OR we put her on Anti-inflammatory Steroids and hope the swelling continues to go down until we can get an image before any surgery decision... If course if a tumor, I could be losing the window for removal... Looking for anyone who might have any advice or experience

was the ultrasound done by a general practitioner or an internist? I would recommend taking him to an internal medicine specialist who can probably read the ultrasound better and be able to better evaluate the "blurry grey". A lot of regular vets can do ultrasounds for obvious abnormalities, but it takes a specialist to really be able to determine what is wrong. Maybe try that before choosing to go to surgery.

Lances ears had hematomas in them, they got so big, they looked like a balloon.  It was sensitive to the touch.  Is your corgis ear also red?  We had the hematomas drained a few times.  We eventually figured out he has vasculitis of the ears as well after a hemotoma exploded at the tip of his ear.  Vasculitis affects the blood flow through the veins.  He is now on medicine for that as well as being on the predisone.

The best you can do is listen to what you Veterinarian has to say, think things through and then make the best decision you can.  If you really don't know what to do, trust your  instincts.  I firmly believe that people don't give their "gut feelings" enough credit these days.  No matter what you decide, there is no right or wrong.  Just do the best that you can, and know that all of us here will be hoping for the best.  I truly hope that all goes well and she is able to recover.

What a hard decision.  I guess it depends on your financial situation.  If you are financially able to deal with the surgery and possibly medication after, then I would do the surgery.  I know some vet schools are doing laprascopic surgeries, without having to open them completely up unless they have to.  It's a much less invasive surgery.  If it was me, I'd want to know.  Especially at the age she's at.  If she was 11, probably not, but at only 7 she could have many years left.  I know its hard to lose them, but if able, you should give her the best chance possible.  Good luck.  We're all going to back you with whatever decision you make. *Hugs*

I'm sorry to hear about Lola. I unfortunately don't have any advice, but I'll keep Lola and you all in my prayers.

No advice, just best wishes. We lost one of our corgis at age 6 due to liver problems. Whatever you decide will be the best you can do.

She was on Prednisone for months when younger , the autoimmune showed with low iron and bleeding from her gums as well as other things... She recovered but has been overweight and delicate from it. The new thing is maybe related , maybe something totally new, or even a result of prolonged treatment for the earlier problem... I made the decision to try the Pred. before we consider surgery. We lost her mother when she went in for a biopsy and couldnt deal with the anesthetic I am not ready for her to go under and not wake up. Even the thought of that is tough to deal with. So we 'll try meds first and hope the swelling (if thats what it is) goes down so we can know more without cutting into her. Just hope I am right.

BTW your comment about Lance's ears?? how swollen? Our male has what we have joked about as lumpy ear syndrome... not terrible but one location causes his ear tip to curl over and they are sensitive to touch (but he is overall sensitive , ears and paws) Of all our corgis he has the best pedigree and seems to know it so kind of snooty.

Is it an auto immune inflammatory disease?  Our corgi, Lance (Blue merle) Was just diagnosed with this about 5 months ago.  His is affecting his ears right now, and is on predisone for it.  We are trying to wean him off of them  slowly.  I would try the anti inflammatory steroids, but thats me.   I am not sure if you have used steroids with your corgi before, but they have to be slowly weaned off of them not just stopped abruptly. Once again, I am not sure if this is the right thing for you, but this is what I think, what does your vet think?  I am so sorry you are going through this.  Love the picture of your corgis, so sweet.
