I give up. I can't stick with Twix, it's not happening. My mom doesn't stick with it, my grandparent's don't, my brother doesn't, the hubby doesn't, and Ziggy doesn't.
I try and make it clear that I am talking to him with my voice and body language like reaching out to him and cooing and patting the floor or couch or whatever, and he's just ignoring it all. Plus, he's managed to get out of his harness a couple times the past few days, and "Twix!!!" did not help me at all whereas "Ziggy!" does.
Speaking of which, he is the worst dog in the world about walking lol. Refuses to be good even for treats.
Anyhow, I am not as bothered by this failure as I thought I would be, because even though Ziggy is not my most favorite name in the world, it is what I learned him to be, and it doesn't feel quite right calling him something else. I've learned that if I ever wind up with another rescue, to either change it's name right from the start or make sure that I like their current name well enough. You win some, you lose some I guess.
I figured I would try another week or two of "Twix" but the more it's said and the more he ignores, the less I like it anyhow haha.

When I first read this, I thought you were giving him up too! Glad it's just a name change. I've found that over time they all tend to give themselves nicknames anyway. Kadi is often "Squiggle Widget".
Whats in a name....? Like Ellen said, I thought there were 2 dogs and you were giving up on one!! At least thats not the case! LOL I named my first Corgi the dream name I wanted for a Corgi, Emma Anne. Nice and English and cute. She is an angel now. I rescued 2 last May, a mom and her son. His name was King Arthur...neither King or Art were names I wanted, so I called him Jack (as in Jack Bauer from 24 and also our real last name!)....his nick name became "roanie"...some how I came up with Jackaroanie (sung to the tune of "we having beef-a-roni"..don't ask, my mind is weird) also call him roanie-pony. Now the mom was the one that was injured and on the mend. She had been attacked by something (I'm suspecting coyote) and the owner didn't take care of the injuries which were infected with maggots...he couldn't afford the vet bill so he contacted corgi-aid....Her name was...get this...K9! What an AWFUL name esp for a sweet little girl Pemmy! I named her Katie, since the K part sounded like K9 and she was very shy and scared and I wanted her to learn her nice name. Her nick name is Katie-bug and we have several "bug" songs for her:) I think ZIGGY is a cute name for a boy, but if you don't like it that much, try some variations of it or try calling him "Twiggy" until he learns that....of course you can call him "Thing 1 (&2 in my case)" thats what my hubby will call mine at times!
Did you try the Name Game? It worked with my dog. He doesn't even respond to his old name anymore.
My daughter got a pup that a rescue had named Pumpkin, but he was no Pumpkin. He's a Joey. The kids, however, persist in calling him Pumpkin, partly out of perversity. But Mom (and other adults) prevailed, and he is Joey.
Personally, I like Ziggy, but if it has memories from the old life for you or the pup that you'd rather forget, then by all means persist. If you feel indifferent, well, whatever :)
Ziggy isn`t so bad for a little while!
Ellen Andersen, NOOOOOOOO! LOL. Never ever ever! I love my little bunbum, and he's been through so much already. I am thinking I will just leave it at Ziggy until he earns himself a very fitting nickname and then maybe ease into that, but it has to be a natural nickname, one that just kinda sticks one day, not one that I take time to think of, ya know?:P
GPN, The Ears is possibly one of the cutest nicknames I've ever heard:O And very fitting for Corgi ears <3
Good grief...when I first starting reading your post I thought you'd given up on the pooch, not just the name! PHEW! Ziggy isn't bad. It's kind of cute and he knows it. Maybe you could slowly ease in another 'pet' name. My pooches answer to several names (or none at all, sometimes).
Our name Dipper is working fine but when my son and I are talking to each other rather than to Dipper he often is The Ears. As in, "Did you take The Ears out?" or "Did you feed The Ears?"
Well thank you:P It's his name, so I guess I do too. I wouldn't pick it out personally for a dog that didn't have a name, but it suits him, and he is closed to suggestions! xD
I love Ziggy!
