So sadly we had a mishap in our usual dog park today. We were at the MSPCAs dog park this afternoon and the only other dog there was an Aussie cattle dog. She and the owner seemed nice and another dog joined us as well. The dogs were playing with some balls that are often lying around the park. Everything was great for a while when out of nowhere the cattle dog started attacking poor Penny. She ended up with a cut on her eyelid and some hefty emergency vet bills that the other owner offered to split with me. Just a general warning to everyone to keep a close eye on their pups, even when things seem to be fine they could turn for the worse unexpectedly.

Might be worth checking into agility training. If there are some classes in your area, this is a great way to get exercise and challenge your dog's intellectual skills, and it's in a controlled environment with people who are more likely to be responsible about dog behavior. Dogs love agility training, and it's not very hard for the humans. Or...did you see the recent video of the corgi practicing its herding instincts? Possibly a group near you is into training shepherd dogs to herd -- that'll giv your pooch a good run! :-D

Yea, I wouldn't bring her so often if we lived somewhere she could run around and be safe. I can walk her around a lot but it's no substitute for them running around. I think I'll be taking her somewhere else from now on though if I can. We've been to dog parks for a long time and nothing like this has happened before. Just be careful out there everyone!

Oh dear. I hope your Penny heals soon.

Well, it's nice (I guess) that she offered to "split" the vet bills...but since it was her dog that pounced, she might have offered to cover the whole fare.

I second & third Susan and Jane's remarks. My vet inveighs against dog parks -- he really thinks they're unsafe. That's why it's so annoying that some of our neighbors are bound & determined to use our neighborhood park, whose "leashed dogs only" rules are prominently posted, as their private dog park. I feel I can't take my dogs there because of all the dogs running loose -- often dogs that don't come to call.

Dog parks scare me too...I have parked outside a nice one but never went in due to the bigger dogs. There is a new one I might try in the town I work in...just not sure.

Hope Penny is feeling better!!!!!!

Dog parks - you just never know what your going to get. Besides agression, you don't know who has had their vaccinations. I steer clear of them.

Glad Penny's injuries were no worse. We live in the country and Abbey has acres to explore. Bless you and PENNY!

Frankly that is what scares me about dog parks.  Hope Penny heals quickly.
