Well, it has been a very busy Mother's Day weekend. Saturday was a Mother's Day barbecue at my sister's house with about 20 people including 5 children. Therefore, Bailey was left at home (crated) for the afternoon. I am a highly overprotective corgi daddy. Not only do I want a group kids ranging from 3 to 9 trampling my dog (the younger bunch become oblivious to the squatty puppy under their feet) but I also want to avoid the kids getting scratched or nipped by a playful corgi puppy who still considers scratching and nipping as a form of play. Some parents understand a playful puppy and teach their kids how puppies play while others stare at you with evil eyes when their child aggressively plays with the puppy, gets a little scratch, and is now screaming that the puppy tried to bite him/her. I am still trying my best to train Bailey but he is only 4 months old.
Now today was a nice laid back Mother's Day again at my sister's house with just us, my mother, sister, brother-in-law, and 2 nephews. My nephews (aged 8 & 4) are both in love with Bailey and fully understand puppy behavior. Zachary (8) truly understands this and is also very protective of Bailey. Ryan (4) has gotten significantly more comfortable with Bailey over the past month and is pretty tough despite his age. Needless to say, Bailey LOVES visiting his human cousins he runs and herds them like two little calves. There is nothing sweeter that watching young kids gently hugging a corgi puppy or laughing uncontrollably when the puppy goes crazy licking their ears and face.
Well, this weekend was also the official opening of my sister's pool. Ninety degree weather combined with a perfectly crystal clear pool marked the first swimming of the summer season. Although we have a little kiddie pool at our house in which Bailey wades, he had never seen a full size in ground pool. So, we head to the pool in which my nephews are swimming and I sit on the steps as Bailey walks around the pool and investigates. I figured that he would look and sniff and then back away from the screaming kids and the splashing water. No, instead I was shocked to watch this dog leap into the pool. I freaked out and so did my sister. I freaked out for a split second because I watched my corgi sink first before coming up to the surface and start swimming like a champ. I was so proud.....a natural. However, my sister was freaking out because she did not want the dog to scratch her pool liner. I understood her worry so poor Bailey was removed from the pool and not permitted back into the water. Even my request to let him swim under supervision was shot down because she was afraid that his hair may clog the pool filter. No matter what the outcome, the highlight of my weekend was watching Bailey dive into the pool. I was so pissed that I did not bring my camera.
Now, Bailey is sound asleep in our bed, totally knackered from a day of sun and fun. I hope everyone had a fabulous mother's day.

What a wonderful story! Your Bailey in the big pool reminds me so much of when I got Teri, my first dog in 48 years and my first CWC (not the last, though, since I had added to more after falling head over heels with Teri....literally and figuratively!). Anyway, I took her down to the river (Shenandoah runs right by me) and I honestly didn't think she'd go in but she took one look and took a flying leap! I freaked, too, but she just popped up and swam around gleefully! The river was low and it was in a quiet pool area and not deep at all. It was deeper than her height but at that time...well, she didn't have much height! All three of my corgs love the water.
You sound like an awesome corgi parent, Michael. Bailey is one lucky pooch.
