Bear, Goldy and I have begun clicker training. Today was day 1...and thank goodness for smart Corgis!
The downside of having two dogs by yourself - you're supposed to separate them when you train them. Even though both of my dogs are crate trained and go into their crate happily everyday when I say "crate," when I crate one to work with the other - the barking is INSANE.
SO, we're making it our own and doing it together, and so far so good. When one sits, I click and reward. Then, I say stay to that one. When the other sits, I click and reward, and say stay to that one.
Today alone Goldy has starting sitting, she started down and was catching on quite well when I felt they'd had too many treats :) and ended the training session. And Bear's training is coming back to him quickly - I had been slacking on that one.
I didn't call the behaviorist, instead I took a good hard look in the mirror and realized that I hadn't spent the time with Goldy that I had spent with Bear when he was a puppy. We went to Pet Smart today - it's POURING rain here and COLD - and the trainer guy there LOVES Corgis and always comes and sees the dogs when we come in. I told him about the problems I was having and he took us in the little training area. He felt like Goldy was REALLY trainable - she was sooo attentive to him and responded well to sitting for him. It made me feel better and worse all at the same time. Better because I know that I can work with her, and worse that I let her behave this way.
As I write this, both dogs are in the down position on the floor staring at me. I keep telling them good dog - but they don't move, they're waiting on a click and a treat.
It's wonderful.
I'm sure I'm not doing this whole clicker thing right, but I'm stopping tomorrow to pick up a book at Barnes and Noble. But so far we've done pretty good with marking good behavior.
Now, just to locate pants with pockets that I can wear 24/7. :)
