I just spent the day at the vet with Penny...she ate a dead toad...well when they eat a toad they start foaming at the mouth...drooling...lethargic...get REALLY sick and to make it worse she ate it whole and the skeleton is in her tummy.......x-rays...poisen control call...vet check...special food I have to feed her a TABLESPOON at a time...what an ordeal!!! She is out cold on the dining room floor now...and doing much better...poor baby was sooo sick...now we just have to pray that she passes the skeleton without any issues...UGH! I am so glad that she is ok...scared the heck out of me! I got a brochure on pet insurance...Have any of you looked into that?

Melinda, I hope Penny is all better by now, I can just see Edward doing something like this!!! He is eating the little cherries that are falling off our black cherry tree in the backyard and something made him pretty sick last week: vomiting and upset stomach for about four hours!!! I was getting pretty nervous so I can't imagine what your ordeal must have been like!! I will definitely be on the lookout for these dumb toads!!!!!

Penny is doing fabulous. We talked to the vet today and can start integrating some of her regular food into the rice food. She is stuck to us like glue the past couple of days...it must have been pretty scarey for her too!

Alright! At least now Penny knows that toads are not part of a healthy corgi diet....

Penny is doing much better today. She has kept her food and water down and she finally pooped. She isn't too happy about the rice food and doesn't understand why she can't have any treats when she has been good though. I am so glad she is ok...it was not a good experience!

Penny is doing pretty good today...still a little lethargic but she ate her two teaspons of food and drank some water and has kept it down. She slept last night on my lap for about 3 hours and then in her crate for about 12 hours! She hasn't pooped yet...but I suppose there isn't much in there to make her have to go. We'll be keeping a close eye on the little darling! Thanks so much for all the well wishes. I am going to check into the pet insurance plans today. My vet laughed yesterday and said she gets the feeling Penny is going to be a money magnet!

We have tons of tree frog every spring because of our pond. I've been lucky with both of my dogs. The first time Duncan saw a frog (or toad) he started after it, and I hollered leave it, and he did and still does. He just gets his nose real close to it and watches them.

Oh dear, she gulped it down in one move??? LO has a friend in the back yard that comes out at night, he just herds it though.

I'm glad she is going to be alright. I am surprised she would actually eat a toad..mostly they spit them right out as the foaming starts right away.

Poor Penny! I had no idea toads could be so toxic. I googled and it seems that different species of the Bufo toad specifically have varying levels of toxicity, from highly so (kills your dog in 10 minutes for a variety mostly found in Florida) to what you describe (more typical of toads in the Midwest). Jack does not try to eat toads; he herds them. He follows them when they move, then lies down and waits calmly while they stop, then follows them again when they move and tries to push them to get them to go a certain way. Kind of funny, but it never occurred to me his little hobby could turn dangerous if he decided to pick one up.

I hope Penny has a quick recovery!
