It seems that Paul & I have moved into a high tick area! we took both Oscar & Sam to the local Kurrajong vet the other day and she informed us that the area was bad for bush & paralysis ticks!. Shock horror I almost lost it at the vets I said that we frontline plus both dogs and should I get a tick collars for both the dogs? I understand they smell quite bad?. The vet also recommended a tick rinse that you could dab straight on the tick or rinse the dogs with it!. I'm so paranoid to take the dogs outside now and summer isn't here yet we are still in winter even though it has been a very mild winter here this year!.

Can anybody give me some good advise as what to do?. My Partner Paul found 2 bush ticks on him tonight and being a Registered Nurse knew exactly what to do he has only ever had one tick in his life and that was earlier this year.

Thanks for all the comments and advise I think I will take my vets advise and switch to Avantix as everybody I have spoken to in the area has more or less said the same thing Frontline Plus is ineffective but to make sure I check both Oscar and Sam over thoroughly each time they come from outside!. I have a flea & tick rinse if needed will let you know how I go!. plus I will now go to fortnightly rather than monthly with the applications for both Boys!.

Be aware that the Lyme vaccine is not 100 percent effective. It is still possible for the dog to get Lyme. I didn't get the vaccine done when Becca was a puppy based on her breeder's recommendation. She is vaccinated now, but a friend's golden tested positive and he was vaccinated.

My breeder said her vet was no longer recommending Frontline as last season it performed poorly. My vet recommends K-9 Advantix and so far we have not had any fleas or ticks (knock on wood). Because Maine has such a occurrence of lyme disease, Nemo has also gotten the vaccination. He had his second shot in the series today. So far I have seen no adverse reactions.

Advantix is supposed to repel ticks so may be better than Frontline. My brother used to use it on his dogs when Frontline wasn't working and it worked great. I bought Franklin a Seresto collar. Lasts 8 months and repels and kills both fleas and ticks. I have been using it for 2 weeks now and haven't seen a single tick on him. Was picking about 2-3 a week of him prior to that. It has no smell and is safe to bathe and swim with the collar on. It is a new product by the makers of Frontline, very safe, and  very effective.

Anecdotally, K9 Advantix may be better for ticks than Frontline, but nothing is 100% effective.

Becca tested positive to Lyme disease this year. I had been using Frontline Plus, now the ticks here seem to be immune to it. I switched to Activyl. There are a few things I don't like. I have to be very careful the cat has no contact with it, and it makes Becca's coat greasy. However I have found no ticks since I switched. Most of my neighbors made the switch to it as we'll.

We have a lot of ticks in North Carolina plus we live in a forest. My boys have been on Revolution for many years and it seems to work.  The few ticks we have found on them are dead. Roger gets more ticks on himself playing golf then the dogs ever get. (If he didn't hit in the woods this could be avoided) Our boys prefer to lay on the deck rather than the grass or pine straw. I am sure this helps also.

Congrats on your new home. We only have a month where ticks are bad here. I believe they say you can dab a bit of oil on a tick and that will kill the tick. I always have gotten by with using Frontline also. I would NOT use a tick collar, at least the ones we have here are not safe for dogs.
