yup, Ollie got so sick the first time! He was ok by morning so the vet thought it may have just been too much for his little body. For him, I think it was more the dewormer than the shots.. so we started spreading them out more & he was just fine once we did them one at a time :)

very true beth he does have to have another rabies at 1 year and a 3 year booster at that time also, yesterday was his 3rd round of puppy shots and added the rabies, thats when he got sick, I am not thinking of not giving him them again, I was just worried and wondering if other dogs get sick also, if it was normal. he has to get 2 more in 3 weeks also one for kennel cough prevention "for the groomer" and one for something else because we live in the forrest he can catch something from the deer

Jane and Suzi:  If he just had his four-month puppy shot, they will most certainly require at least the one-year rabies booster next year;  at this point I doubt he's considered fully immunized.  Because rabies is required by law, they are very tough on the titer rules and I don't know that vomiting eight hours after the shot would be sufficient to request an exemption.

Even the the parvo/distemper, after just the puppy shots it's unlikely his titer would show sufficient protection, I would think---- generally dogs are considered fully vaccinated after the one-year shots, NOT after the puppy rounds.

My cat was fine if the shots were spread out, feverish and lethargic if she got them all at once.  That isn't an allergy; that's the body's normal healthy response to having the immune system stimulated.  Just like people, some animals get feverish and achy after the immune system is stimulated.   Some don't.

Thank u Beth I will keep that in mind for next year- as far as the rabies and other shot together

I agree about being watchful for allergies.  It's also true, though, that some dogs just get sick because the vaccine revs up the immune system.  Also some dogs are stress-vomiters;  too much excitement, stress, or new activity can make them vomit much later in the day.  This sometimes happens with Jack.

The rabies vaccine, though, seems to bother some pets when given with other shots.  If it were me, I'd make a note of it, let the vet know, and request that in the future when he needs rabies he gets it separately from his other shots.  I had a cat who needed the rabies separately.  It's only every 3 years here in PA so it wasn't that big a deal, but it did mean an extra trip to the vet a week or two after her normal appointment.  My current cat can tolerate rabies with the other shots.  FYI, my own vet will NOT give the rabies with other shots to a puppy, but will to a larger dog if it's over a certain weight.

I would at least call your vet and just let them know that he had a reaction to the vaccination. In the future they may prefer to do a titer instead of immunizing him again just to be safe.

thank you, I was worried last night, today he ate his breakfast and drank water so I am sure he is gonna be fine, just a bit worried as he is only 16 weeks old, I know he needs the shots, just was worried about him last night and was shocked when he vomited :(

Hi Suzi, it is not normal, if Zeus is breathing heavy, face is swelling and eyes watering, and/or he's throwing up, he could be having an allergic reaction. Take him back to the Vet immediately. Anytime your dog receives a shot, stick around the area for the next hour, if your dog is indeed allergic to the shot, it will show within that time frame and you can quickly bring him back to the office.
