We were walking Jack in the park today. He was leashed, on his regular 6-foot lead, and he was walking nicely on a loose leash. We were near an access road and a food concession stand, and there was a family standing around with three dogs; the apparent father with a pug and another small dog, mom, and a few kids. One of the kids was a girl who looked about 10, and she had a big bear of a black dog on a leash; he probably went about 65 pounds.

We were walking past them, but not close enough at all for Jack to reach them on his leash. He was more or less ignoring them (because he had his sights set on the food concession stand ahead, where sometimes he finds a bit of roll or french fry lying around). Well, the big black dog growled, barked, and charged, dragging the little girl forward a good 10 feet. Jack yelped (he wasn't attacked, just spooked) and bolted right to the end of the leash towards the access road. You know how much force a full-grown Corgi in flight can generate, so it was very lucky I didn't lose him, and there was a car coming too. My husband jumped between the charging black dog and us and I hustled Jack out of there. I did say something to the family along the lines of "Jesus, the dog weighs more than the kid on the end of the leash!"

Who on earth takes a dog-aggressive dog to a busy park on a Sunday evening and puts a 40-pound child in charge of holding the leash!?! Some people don't have the sense they were born with. My dog did nothing to instigate him. He did not even look at them, and we were not near enough that the dog should have felt threatened.

I wanted to throttle the parents.

Dez, we have a neighbor with one of those electric fences and I am afraid to walk by their house on the sidewalk because their dogs are huge and bark ferociously when we go by!! It is interesting how people come and get their dogs when I am walking the doberman though. Can you borrow one? That would get the chihuahua's owner moving I bet.

Whew, thank goodness Jack is okay! Some people just don't have any consideration for animal safety. I am sure the little girl loved the black dog most, or something like that and the parents just let her hold it without thinking. It is that lack of thought that gets people hurt.

:( We have a similar problem in our neighborhood. A woman on the corner we pass to make a the circuit around the neighborhood likes to let her chihuahua outside in her front yard off leash to go potty. We HAVE to pass this house to get out of our circle, so it isn't like I can choose another way to go. When I get home we walk at 6 after dinner, and every time we pass that house that lady has her dog out there. The dog races up to the edge of the yard, growls and barks at Dex. The first time it happened I just hurried past, the second time it happened I picked him up and carried him past the house, but the last time it happened I asked the woman to call her dog off. She gave me the dirtiest look, told me she could do whatever she wanted on HER property and just stood there while her dog inched closer and closer towards us out into the street, snapping and barking. :/ Ever since I have just waited until 7 to take a walk, just to avoid that crabby meany. Ugh.

I'm glad that your dog didn't get hit by a car either. My sister had 3 daschunds (one of each hair type). She has to walk them along a busy road because where she lives she doesn't have a large yard for them to run. There isn't much to the sides of the street and the newest one was a puppy. He got spooked and dashed on her and ended up tearing our of her hands and into the street. He didn't make it. This was a tiny dog and she was a full grown woman. So I can't see how anyone would allow a small child to walk a large dog. Another scary thing is that many dogs can pull out of their collars. I am constatnly watching when my dog is out and frequently see people with no control over their dogs. I don't really like the retractable leashes either. My neighbor has one and her kids can't control their dog when they take her out and she is a cockerpoo. I am constantly at hand when my son is holding our dog's leash and he usually hands it back after only a few feet.

We have had our share of close calls over the years and I think I know how you feel! It is so frustrating how neglectful people are!!

Fortunately for everyone Jack is not the type to engage if another dog charges; in play he always wins his wrestling matches, but when faced with the possibility of an actual fight he high-tails it out of there. The thing is, as someone mentioned, I don't understand why they didn't have the girl holding one of the two little dogs. The dog she had was bigger than her.

We took Sami on her first picnic today. We bought Subway and found a nice park with shade, tables it was really nice. There was only a couple of people playing tennis at the courts. Once we finished our sandwiches we decided to walk off lunch. We had not gotten very far when out of no where there was a beautiful and large Shepard....no leash and not a person around that he belonged to! We just turned around and headed for the car. I'm just glad nothing happend. Also thank goodness Jack nor you guys were injured or anything. I don't blame you for being annoyed or scared. That was a scary situation.

Wow, you guys are lucky that everyone was ok. You would think the little kid would be in charge of one of the little dogs.

Thank goodness nothing happened to your Jack. It is truly annoying when other people are not responsible dog owners.
