Tegan ate a fig that fell off our tree. I checked online and got contradictory information. Some sites said they were potentially dangerous and at the least would cause diarrhea & stomach pain. Other sites said they shouldn't be a problem as long as she didn't eat too many. Right now she looks like absolutely nothing is wrong, but should I be concerned?

Thanks! Excellent -- the fig was overripe (we missed it and it fell on the ground), so that's great news. And as of this morning, no tummy problems, diarrhea or other issues.

Hi Carol, ripe figs are fine, 3 figs can provide 5 grams of fiber that's why too much can cause diarrhea.

On the other hand, "milky juice" from unripe figs and crushed leaves is toxic, you can read more here. Indoor / potted figs are considered great air cleaning plants, so powerful that NASA did a study and concluded that it is a hyperaccumulator of benzene, methane...etc.

Thanks, Natalie! Only one site (and it didn't exactly look like it was written by a vet) said they were dangerous (it didn't say exactly what the effects are supposed to be either -- argh!) and that you should call a vet. Right now Tegan is running around, barking (the neighbors just got home) & doing her usual evening ritual, so thankfully I don't think the vet is in order. I don't know about the amount of hydrogen peroxide I should give her to induce vomiting either -- I really need to find that out! I'm going to keep watching her for now, and I'll definitely post the outcome (no pun intended). Thanks again :)

Ok found this from this site : http://www.petplace.com/dogs/how-to-induce-vomiting-emesis-in-dogs/...
The appropriate dose of hydrogen peroxide
is one teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight
. If you have an oral syringe, one teaspoon equals 5 cc or 5 ml. Once given, walk your dog around or gently shake the stomach area to mix the peroxide with the stomach contents. Vomiting should occur within 15 to 20 minutes. If no vomiting occurs, you can safely repeat the three percent hydrogen peroxide once. If it is still not effective, your dog may need to be seen by a veterinarian for stronger vomiting medication
.

Dangerous as in posionous or diarrhea and stomach pain? You can give hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting if you are worried about it. I forget the amount your suppose to give though...
