A beautiful day at the park rolling in yucky things...

We took Tegan to a beautiful park near us -- all of the trails are off-leash! The weather was perfect, the views were spectacular, and Tegan rolled in everything stinky she could find. Why do dogs do that? I know that in general the smellier something is, the more dogs like it, but the way she just dives onto things & rubs her entire head and body into it with such vigor is funny. At least on one hand, but it does leave her a little less than bath-time fresh. And it's usually stuff I can't really see, just certain patches on the trail. I've always wondered why they do it...

Thanks for the link; that was interesting, and makes a lot of sense. LOL -- the best part was the story about riding home with their Golden after she rolled on the dead fish. I feel their pain. :) Tegan hadn't had a bath recently so maybe it's more about covering her own scent -- the "need for stink" -- love it! I'm going to keep asking all of my dog-loving friends whether their dogs do the same thing, and if they do it more often right after a bath.

Most dogs love to roll in stinky things, Brody and my brother in laws dog Vince do not get along, escept out walking in the country. The last time we did this they both found the most digusting stinking pile of something along the trail. Side by side they dove right in all thoughts of I hate that guy were gone, overpowered by the need for stink!

That has baffled me for a while now. I'll be walking the three out by the lake and the next thing I know one of them has found a spot and starts rolling and gyrating on there backs like they have died and gone to Heaven. I once thought that that was a way that they try to cool their backs off because done here in South Florida it gets very hot during the day but they seem to do the rolly thing at any time. I wonder if it's a Corgi thing or do other breeds do it too?

That was interesting Stephanie! Sparty loves to roll not always in smelly stuff but Izzy only seems to roll if she finds something stinky!
