Today we picked out our first Corgi.  I've named him Brian after being a long time fan of the Family Guy.  This will be my first small dog ever!  I am a stay at home mom to 2 gorgeous German Shepherds.  They've been wanting a small dog to call their own.

I've read many blog posts on food and other things, but I'm so overwhelmed with trying to find out about a breed that I know nothing about... other than I've always wanted one because they are cute.  SO...  after much research, most people suggest "Wellness" food.  Anyone here care to comment on it?  I've been feeding the Germans IAMs which I am reading is basically crap.  Now to figure them out also.

Today I've only picked Brian out.  We cannot pick him up for another 2 weeks.  At this point, what type of shots should he have?  And how many are in a series of shots?  Uggg!  Is there anyone that can help me with a few of these questions?

Thanks so much!  This is a great site!

Hi Stephanie,

I have been following your blog & the developing story.  I am so sorry that you had to make a difficult decision.   Hopefully the current puppy owners will get out of the puppy business.  Don't know if this will help you or not, but I live in Florida and we got our corgis (Cardis) from a breeder in Louisiana.  We did not meet either puppy before they were flown to us, but both are well-adjusted dogs (the breeder has great detail on his website of how his puppies are raised).  And, just to confirm information you have received from others, he would not send us the puppies before they were 8 weeks old.   If you find a responsible breeder, in addition to taking care in how they raise their pups, they will do their best to match you to a puppy.  So my experience has been positive, even though I wasn't able to meet the puppies prior (which is probably just as well or I probably would have wanted to take them all!)   I wish you the best of luck in your search!

Oh, Stephanie, I am sooo sorry and feel bad for those pups also. I have had to wait over 4 months to get a dog and it seems like forever BUT it will be worth it:)

I know a breeder on another forum that is from Utah, I think she is a big part of the corgi rescue in the area as well. She doesn't have any pups but she might know of some in the area. Let me know if you want her email.

I'm so very sorry.  :(  I had my own share of puppy woes before I finally found Ellie.  And even then I had to have her flown to me, as there aren't any breeders even remotely nearby that were planning pups for the next year or two.  :/  It was a bit risky since I didn't get to meet her in person, but she definitely helped me to pick a really happy (and healthy!) puppy.  Be patient and stick with it, you're sure to find one that's just right for you!

Yeah... I haven't had very good luck on finding some specific breeders.  I do have a lead on a good breeder that is semi-nearby but the pups won't be ready to go home until Dec 15th.  I was really hoping to find one as soon as possible so I could get potty training well underway before the worst of our weather hits.  AND not deal with a brand new puppy at Christmas as well.  SO... I will search :)

I'm so sorry, but maybe it is for the best. I would look for a breeder that is doing something with their dogs (showing, herding, agility, etc) and does some health testing. I was going to link you to the PWCCA breeder referral but it looks like there are no members at all in Utah, which is rather strange. Maybe you could find someone in a nearby state that could point you in the right direction?

Thanks :)

Yes, so glad that I spoke with my vet.  She says she gets so frustrated with people that just want to have puppies but have no desire to be responsible for them.  They should not be left outside without vaccinations and a good body weight.  She said she doesn't care how well they are eating... they should be inside with the family.  And I would have a better puppy if I find one that's been taken care of like this.  So...  I have some good leads.  I'm confident I'll find my Corgi :D

Oh Stephanie!  I'm so sorry!  I just finished posting something but deleted it when I saw you posted this!  In the long run, it's the best decision.  But how disappointing!  That was nice of the vet to call you.

Well... I'm heartbroken :O(   The search for a puppy continues.

I had my actual vet call me instead of just the desk girl.  The vet said that she tells ALL her breeders that puppies should stay in the house until 10 weeks... but 8 weeks as a minimum.  But...  the thing that cinched it up was the vet said that these puppies should NOT be outside yet.  And they have been outside since 3 weeks old.  She said that she would caution someone who choose a puppy that was taken care of like this.  They do not have the metabolism to be outside at this age nor the calories onboard.  So...  I had to make the awkward phone call to the owner of the puppies to try and plead my case.  She said that she didn't mind keeping and feeding the puppy for another 4 weeks (she didn't sound thrilled with this) but she said these are outside dogs.  And I said "well, your dog, the mother, may be an outside dog, but the puppies shouldn't be outside at this point."  She said that she wouldn't change this part of the deal.  So...  she is sending me back my deposit and I will be searching for another puppy :O(    I will leave the photos up for now since I don't have another to take his place yet...  but I am so sad.  sob sob    BUT, in the end, I do agree with my vet that it wouldn't be in my best financial interest and the puppy's overall interest to buy a puppy that wasn't taken care of properly from the beginning.

6 weeks is really young. The code of ethics for the PWCCA requires puppies to be 10 weeks old before they go to new homes; for cardis it's 7 weeks, which is really the bare minimum IMO. If you do get him that early I would be prepared to do a lot of socializing and working on nipping, puppies really learn a lot from their mother and littermates at that age. And if they're being kept outside I can't imagine they're getting a ton of human interaction either...
