I love being a Mom. I'm a Mom to two beautiful little girls. I'm a Mom to a cuddly American Eskimo Dog. And I would love to be a Mom to a beautiful pembroke corgi puppy. This, however, is proving to be much more difficult than I had anticipated. The journey, so far, has been been filled with lots of ups and downs, but I've come close on three separate occasions.
I once found a breeder within a 3-hour drive that had just what I wanted: a female red/white puppy. She wasn't affiliated with any corgi clubs, but she did show. I was so excited and the breeder seemed really friendly in the initial e-mail contact. But apparently I offended her, or maybe seemed suspicious, when I didn't offer my full name by the second e-mail. She refused to answer anymore e-mails and phone calls were ignored. I was sad, but apparently it just wasn't meant to be.
Another time I found a breeder with my second-favorite type of pup: a blue tri female. Again, she wasn't affiliated with the area corgi club. I know that blue tri isn't bred for, but I still think they're adorable and she would just be a pet. Again, I got so excited when I saw they were within a two hour drive. Initial contact was promising, as I was the only one interested in her, but then someone put a deposit down on her before I could finish getting information about her parents' health screenings.
Similar to the blue tri, I found a red/white female puppy that was simply stunning and made contact with the breeder. She even had the blaze up the nose and full collar that I so desperately want! She lives 5 hours from me and I wanted to have her meet me just 1 hour closer to where I live. Unfortunately, someone who lived closer (and wouldn't need her to meet them) put down a deposit.
I'm trying very hard to avoid having a puppy shipped, but it's starting to look like I might end up giving in. There are very few breeders within a 4 hour drive. And by few I mean four. They all either have waiting lists that are far too long, or they charge too much. One wants $1000 for a pet-quality pup. That, to me, is just way too much for a family companion.
Do any of you have experiences with having a puppy shipped? I really don't want to do it, even though breeders have said it's perfectly safe, but I also don't know if I'm patient enough to wait 3 years. I know there's a puppy out there that's just right for us and I can't wait to meet her!

Try petfinder. I put in your city and came up with two mixes. Don't know if they are still available or not. They sure look like corgis, especially the female. Good luck on your search.
@ Sondra - Yes, I tried the AKC site and didn't really have much luck there, either. I'm hopeful I'll find a pup this year, though. There are some litters due around the middle of summer that I've been keeping tabs on, though there's no guarantee there will be a pup available for me.
What stops me most is when I can't get a clear answer about temperament for a puppy. There are a few that I didn't pursue because I wasn't confident they would have the temperament that I'm looking for.
Well, usually the people who are showing or working their dogs are the ones doing the health testing, which is why I mention it. You don't see many people breeding with no purpose other than pets, who are fully health testing their dogs.
Have you checked the AKC web site?
I totally agree with you, if you are going to pay big bucks for a pup, you might as well get what you want!
Neither of our dogs came from show homes, but they are healthy and happy and we love em!
Good luck, there is a pup out there for you!
@ rebecca - haha, I like how the console just "happened" to break. XD And I'm not sure why the breeder was offended, just that she said she had never had to ask for a name before. People always offered their names immediately. I'm not mad about it, she's just trying to place her puppy in the best home, but it did make me a bit sad.
@ Jane - if someone handed me a pup, I doubt I'd be commenting on color. I'd grab it, cuddle it, and take it home, hehe. But if I'm paying $600+ then I might as well just hold out for what I really want. And the breeders I've spoken to all guaranteed the temperament. The ones with lists would choose the pup for me, so I wouldn't have to really worry about that part. I don't really care about parents that are being shown, I just want to make sure that the parents are free of the usual genetic issues.
im so sorry this has been happening to you, i can imagine how frustrating all this must be. i wonder why the one breeder got offended just because u didnt put your full name?? there is a corgi out there for you and u never know when u will come a crossed one. when i was searching i looked on craigs list because a nice lady who takes in fosters was looking for a home for his mother. she had already found a home when i responded but she had 3 pups while fostering. she asked if i was interested, well it took 3 days of convincing my husband, what won the argument? his xbox "some how" broke and needed a new one, so i made a deal with him ;P hehe i know that sounds bad but we got him. so he didnt come from a breeder per say but he had been to the vet 6times before we brought him home so he was very healthy.
i know u would be a great corgi mama and i have faith that one day u will find the one:)
