Tucker has always taken a liking to water, despite the fact that he really can't swim very well. This spring we went for our first dock diving class, where he showed up a bunch of weenie labs by bravely jumping off the dock and into the deep unknown. I took him today to another class where he showed great enthusiasm for the "game"! And so, we are going to enter our first dock diving trial in two weeks-- wish us luck! :-)
A funny aside, the instructor wanted to use Tucker as a demo dog, because she knew he would jump. I was running late and left him in the car with the A/C going so I could run over to where she was giving the Dock Diving 101 lesson... she told me to go get him ready. A few minutes later, I come back with Tucker (ya know, little Corgi) who is strutting along in his life vest. The look on all the other classmates faces was priceless! They all brought "big" dogs and didn't expect the demo dog to be.. well, quite so vertically challenged. ;-)

@ Susan, your comment about never pulling or pushing the dog in because it totally wrecks their confidence is spot on! It applies to so many other things in training animals and you said it so well.
Anna-- thanks! Yeah, he's pretty proud of himself for jumping.
Susan-- My parents have a pool and we started with him jumping off the top step. He really likes his toys and he eventually got to where he would jump in for them, but it took some time! They say to never push or pull the dog in as it totally wrecks their confidence. I think the key is how much they want to get the toy back!
That is awesome Tucker!!!! Good luck in your trial. You ROCK the FLOP!!!
How did you get him to start jumping and actually like it? Jeli doesn't mind swimming, but she doesn't like to jump in. I would love to do this with her, but haven't been able to convince her to jump from the side of the pool.
Looks like great fun! Love his enthusiasm.
Rebecca-- The great thing is any dog that will jump can be successful in dock jumping. Sure, there are folks who are trying to break records, but there are different divisions for everyone... They even have a different divisions for short dogs!
Lap Class:
Novice Division – 0’1” to 4’11”
Junior Division – 5’0” to 8’11”
Senior Division – 9’0” to 12’11”
Master Division – 13’0” to 17’11”
Elite Division - 18’0” and above
Tucker will probably end up jumping in the Junior division right now. 5 successful jumps in one division earns you a title!
wow! im so happy to see corgis join this sport. i have always wondered how well they would do lol u can tell tucker puts on his brave face and just goes for it
Katy-- Thank you! Tucker is 4 years old. I bet your guy would love this too! We also do agility and one of our former classmates ended up opening this facility. I see you're from MN-- google shows that there's a few places that do it there!
Doug -- Thanks! We'll work on that. ;-)
Beverly -- Oh yeah, he's no dummy!
Linda-- Thank you! I'm sure Max still loves swimming! It's such a great form of exercise without the wear and tear.
WTG Tucker! Like they say it's not the size of the dog in the "fight" it's the size of the "fight" in the dog. This fight being dock diving. I bet my Max would have loved that when he was younger, he loves the water but at age 12 he's a little too old to start throwing himself off docks.
Just like a corgi to figure out another way to get the dummy too
Very nice form. If Tucker hit with a proper belly flop I'd give him a 10.
