Waffle and bacon may have saved my life today

Another shooting at Virginia Tech.  It's the day before finals begin, known as Reading Day, so there's no classes.  Just studying.  I had almost finished a take-home final and needed to go in today to check my work with a book in our department's reading room and turn my test in.  I was going to do this in the afternoon and I was going to park in the Colosseum parking lot so my walk wasn't as long or as cold when I got lunch.  Waffle changed my plans though.  My roommate had his girlfriend over this morning and they were cooking bacon!  Oh sweet, sweet bacon.  He woke me up by whining and begging and pleading to go into the den and mooch bacon off my roommate.  OKAY, I said, FINE. I was tired and it wasn't the first time he threw himself against my door because one of my roommates was cooking something delicious.  So I woke up, took him outside, and then finished what I had to do.  I left my apartment at about 10:30, and decided against parking in the Colosseum lot on a whim.  I finished up my final, turned it in, got food, and walked the LOOOONG walk back to my car.  I ended up leaving campus at about 11:50 and at 12:30, a police officer was murdered in the Colosseum lot. :|  Then later, someone was murdered in the area where I actually did park my car and that person's car was stolen.  If I hadn't woken up early because Waffle wanted bacon, I could be dead.

You're absolutely right. There are nuts in the world, but thankfully they are a small minority. But, they are the ones that make the news. I remember when I had a flight to NY, JFK, less than a week after 9/11. Obviously, I made my plans months earlier. As my husband was recommending that I not fly, my youngest daughter said, "mom, you can't live in fear." Out of the mouths of a baby. I flew. I'm here, so to speak, haha.

Yeah, ODU has a lot more crime than Virginia Tech ever will but VT gets a lot of media coverage because of the massacre 4 years ago.  The most disturbing thing that has happened while I've been here is that a woman got beheaded in the cafeteria by a crazy guy with a knife.  We all get lectured about campus safety and personal safety and the like, and it keeps most of us safe, but no amount of personal preparedness can prevent crazy people from going nuts.

I'm sure there are awful incidents at every college, more frequently than any of us want to think about. VT made it to the news 4 yrs. ago because of the number of students that were killed. But, here in S. CA, I learn from my friends about students missing from UCLA, and assaults at USC. I just happened to be checking Duke's calendar to see when my daughter, Whitney would be coming home; only to read that a girl was raped just outside of Whitney's dorm. Of course, Whitney never would have shared this with me!

The second shooting victim was confirmed though I see now that who he was is not certain.  The VT police think he is the shooter but the Blacksburg police think he is just a student.  The stolen car thing is something I heard but may or may not be true, apparently.  I called my mom as soon as it happened to let her know I was okay, so no one is freaking out.  Some bizarre killing has happened every year I've been here so we're used to it now, as awful as that is.  They live in Virginia Beach, about 6 hours away.

I've just watched it on the news. The reporting is very vague. Only the shooting of the officer was mentioned; there was nothing about a 2nd shooting victim. Has that been confirmed? Lucky you to have Waffle change your scheduled plans, as Corgis love to do! Give him extra hugs and kisses from all of us mycorgi members!

PS Are your parents freaking out? Where do they live?

This one is unrelated to 2007 one.  Don't know the motive at all--it began as a traffic stop in the parking lot and then  things turned bad.

I'm glad that the school handled it well, but so sad that you guys have to go through this again. Although clearly not as awful as the earlier incident, it brings to mind such terrible memories. You sound like you're dealing with this as well as any student could. Does anyone know of a motive and if the 2 shootings are related? I haven't checked the news yet.

Thank you Waffle for demanding bacon.  You probably saved your HokieMom.  We are all saddened that tragedy has again struck the Hokie Nation.  We shall prevail.  Nan, Bear, Tasha and Heronsway Land of the Hokies.

It wasn't as severe as the 2007 one, thank goodness... nowhere near it.  32 people died that first time.  There has been some murder or death every year since then, though none as devastating.  VT responded using the alert system they installed after the 2007 disaster.  We were in lockdown for about 4 hours.  I don't think VT could have handled this situation any sooner or any better.

How scary. Give Waffle some extra bacon tonight. He earned it! I am so sorry about the shootings. I can't believe that it's happened a second time. Has the school contacted the students about what they are doing to keep you all safe and precautions that they think you should take?
