No joke, it was super exciting going to get the little pup! He was super precious running out to greet us as we walked up. The Breeder picked him up and just went "Here he is." and plopped him in my arms.

We went inside and got his papers, information on the shots he got, which he needs, and some food they'd been feeding him. Joe and I kept switching on who was holding him and petting his fluffy butt.

All was well, we had bought a big crate for him to sleep in at the house but used it to transport him home so he could lay out and move around. We stopped at Petco, got him a little collar and nametag... Plus a few other things. xD a chewtoy or two.

Getting home was simple, he slept most of the way, but once in the apartment... He went crazy sniffing everything and looking behind the couch, running around the living room, and then just laying in our laps. Too bad happy little puppy home didn't last too long. I went to get him some water as he'd yet to have some from the trip home, next thing I hear is "Uhh... Get the paper towels and cleaner." from the living room. Watson managed to take a nice little potty break right there in front of my husband. *facepalm* I even warned him of "the potty dance", which I now recognize as two turns and sniffing the same spot several times.

We cleaned up probably 5 different piddle spots yesterday. D: I even stood outside with him 10 minutes after he ate/drank for a whooping 30-45 minutes and yet the moment I get him in the house to put him in his crate, he piddled. *sighs* I've talked with hubby about how if he doesn't go, he's not allowed on the carpet and stays in his crate for another 10-15 minutes, back outside till he goes... Yet, he doesn't go!

We couldn't get him to go outside last night, and the first time he did goes was this morning. We thought that was perfect and he'd do it again. :/ We were wrong. He ate breakfast, we took him out for a while on a walk around the apartments, and yet the moment he gets to the kitchen to drink, he pottied in the floor.

So now I'm going to ask for tips to get him to go outside when we need him too. Obviously he needs to go, and we see the signs for potty time, but when he gets outside he just plays. I've tried making him stand in the "potty area" we've basically designated, but he just tries to play with everything there like leaves, sticks, and dirt. We try to crate him again if he's not gone potty because we know he needs to go, but he won't outside. I know he knows to go outside because he was put outside by the breeder for potty time and what not, but he was left out there to play with the other pups also.

Hang in there! It will be hard in the beginning to figure out his patterns, but you'll get it. I always found after a romping playfest, the puppy will usually go potty even if he just went out recently.

I would add that I have always had better luck with getting a puppy to go if we walk around outside. You can take one of the solid accidents out to the area you want him to go and it may help. Your puppy is still a baby and will often be surprised himself that he suddenly has to go. By 6 months he will be pretty reliable and one year even better. Compare that to a human child that will take 3 years! I have always said "go potty" as soon as the pup squats so I then have a dog that will go on command. It is great when they are older and it is raining and you want them to hurry up.

Thanks for the tips. I'll start taking him out every hour. I hope treats will help, as they helped him get used to staying in his crate longer. It's kinda weird having a pup of our own that we're responsible for. xD My cat already doesn't like him much.

Yeah, Griffin was the same way, too.  I ended up taking him out every hour and saying "go pee, go poop".  This went on until he was about 4 months old.  Then, he started barking to let me know he had to go out.  Yay!

Ellie was exactly the same when we brought her home.  Hang in there!  :)  You're doing things right by putting him back in his crate if he doesn't go.  I know it's frustrating, but he's a young pup in, essentially, a whole new world.  Just keep at it and he'll eventually start to learn.  You could try giving him treats and lots of praise for success when he's outdoors.  I used to give Ellie a treat just as she finished doing her business and it seemed to help a little.

I would just give him some time to adjust. He's in a whole new place, new schedule, new people, it's a lot for a puppy. Just keep taking him out every hour or so and giving him the chance to potty, and watch him like a hawk inside.
