This past Saturday I drove up to Ranier Oregon to meet with Sue Sebring of Corgis of Narnia. She was a VERY nice woman I got to meet all of her 14 corgis, she has 12 Pems and 2 Cardis. They were all so beautiful, nice, and well taken care of. She really seems to know what she is doing, she is very organized, all the dogs have been tested against DM and Von Willabrands. She is planning on breeding one of the beautiful females in June, I cant remember her name, but she is gorgeous. She invited me to come attend the birthing which I am super excited about.
I hope I can make everything work out. My boyfriend of 5 years REALLY does not want me to get a corgi. He doesn't want a small dog because he does not think they are active enough! Corgis are VERY active! Grrrr it is so frustrating, we have been fighting a lot about me getting a corgi. I really just don't understand why it is such a big deal to him. He wants a "man dog" like a lab or retriever. I'm not sure what to do, but I know in my heart that I want a corgi more than anything and I won't be satisfied until I get one!

tell him to educate himself on the breed before he jumps to such untrue conclusions. corgis are in the working class of dogs, right next to labs and golden retrievers. they have just as much energy and need just as much exercise as labs and retrievers. tell him the dog doesn't make the man! my sister and her husband just got a papillon (google it, very small "girly" dog). she had wanted a papillon for years and he wasn't going to stop her. her husband is 6'5 and loves that little dog. he'll play around and rough house with him then cuddle up on the couch with the little pup. if he's a true dog lover, he'll love the dog no matter what.
tell him they are bred to heard cattle. CATTLE! see how he reacts to that. they are truly a big dog in a small package
Thank you all so much for the input and support! Things will work out I just know it. :-)
What a great story, thank you so much for sharing. I hope to make everything work out. I lost the love of my life my Boston terrier 5 years ago as well, and the wound is definetley still fresh..
Jennifer,
In 1993 my husband and I took a trip to the Humane Society to pick out a dog for us. He insisted on a lab puppy. I did not want a puppy, I wanted an older dog--lots of reasons--wasn't thrilled about potty training, older dogs never get homes, etc. We picked out a puppy, but couldn't take him home until the next week. I sat down in the middle of the yard, and 80 dogs came running at me all at once for attention. Out of all these dogs, one pushed his way through, and threw himself down in my lap and rolled over. It was love. I stuck to my guns, and we took that dog home that day. He was 8 months old, and had been abused so bad as a puppy that they had kicked him when his tail was down and separated it from his body. At the shelter, all the other dogs picked on him and drug him around by his scruff, and wouldn't let him eat. The lady let him into her house at night (the only dog) because he was so sweet. This dog became my best friend in life, my soul mate. I lost Dillon five years ago, and the wound is still as fresh now as it was then. He was a corgi mix.
I divorced my husband two years later. The dog stayed. It was the best two decisions I ever made.
Point? Get the corgi. The rest will work out as it's meant to.
Tell him our corgis are every bit as 'big' as our Newfie was. I'm a fan of big dogs too and wanted something in a smaller package that was a 'big' dog. Corgis are PERFECT for that!
Corgis are not small dogs. They are big dogs. With no legs. They don't run -- they FLY. They have big personalities and a lot of them have big-dog barks. Also, my house may have enough fur in it that you would think a big dog lives here, but it does not SMELL like a big dog lives here.
OH MY GOSH please tell him he'll never regret it ...they are not small frankie weighs 40lbs and is so not a small dog.. i can barely pick him up! and hes 15 months old.. Of course you know they are awesome, best dogs ever!
And by the way corgis are way to active for most people!!! Melissa is right your boyfriend doesnt know the breed.. hahah
First let me say that my husband has always loved labs too. He has never got one and still carries a Man-card. My husband is a huge, 6'3" fellow and he loves the corgis. Even though our first, Twinkie, is a little too girlie for him, Logan is ALL boy! I don't know if Matt would have come to this decision on his own or it was the 20 years of not getting his way when it comes to dogs. He even takes Logan to obedience classes. He hasn't ever done that with one of our dogs. Good luck.
PS-Have you shown him John Wolf's page and all of the super-cool, adventurous things he an his "little" dogs do? Very impressive!
You've got to educate that boyfriend of yours if he thinks corgis are small dogs that aren't active....wooooweeee does he have that wrong. Melissa and Kymii's suggestions are excellent!!!!!
And frankly, corgis are much better companions than boyfriends!! Ooops, did I say that outloud? LOL...well, teasing, but that boyfriend needs some corgi awarness training!
