I live in Australia. It is extremely rare that I see a Corgi these days. Is it because they are 'out of fashion'? Years ago, the Afghan Hound was the 'in' dog to have. These days you very rarely see an Afghan Hound. I think it is a shame when a dog breed is used as a fashion statement. I think the Corgi is best know as the Queen's dogs. By what I have seen there appears to be more Corgis in the USA than here in Australia. Any idea why they would be so rare these days?

I also live in Australia, When walking my Cardigan corgi people think she is a mix of something and Corgi, I kind of get sick of telling people that she is a Cardigan corgi. Everyone seems to know of the Pembrokes, and although the Cardigans are the older of the two breeds no one seems to know they even exist. I find it quite sad really. One time I was walking my Cardi through a Sydney suburb and people mistook her for a CAT! I was so angry.

There are barely any Corgis in Sydney, never seen one on the streets or at a park, Even at shows the turn out of Corgi's is a bare minimal. 10 I think was the maximum we've ever seen at a show. And majority were Pembrokes. My dog is now a Minor Bitch in the show ring and has got no competition in the shows.

Ah well, what can you do? Corgis are a beautiful breed and can't imagine my life with out Mab now.

Yes, I think you are probably right. There are so many Maltese/Shih Tzus around here is it unbelievable. Maybe in another few years all you will see are Corgis. LOL.

Hi, new to the site.
We live in Victoria and despite there not being many Corgi's around everyone we run into always tells us that they used to have a Corgi when they were young. I know my Mum did too, so from all these reactions it seems that perhaps Corgi's were the Maltese/Shit Tzu's of the 70s!

Thanks for all your comments. I think Sam could be on the right track here. Where I live is about half way between Sydney and Brisbane so nearer to Queensland. Around my area I have only seen one Corgi. However, wherever you look you see the Maltese/Shih Tzu cross. Even reading the Sydney newspapers I haven't noticed any Corgis for sale. When I got Rusty I had to travel 4 hours to the breeder and this was the only one I could find. Also I think Laura is right in what she says. Dog breeds like colours and everything else go in phases. I still think the Corgi is the most versatile dog breed of them all.

We constantly have people ask us what kind of dog they are too so I don't think they are that plentiful in the US either. The only place I can be sure of seeing them is at a horse event. The horse people have recognized how great they are for years! It is better for the breed not to be overly popular.

I have always wanted to visit Australia, intersting that there isn't a lot of corgis there, Although it seems to me that dogs are like cars to some extent. My mother in law bought a yellow car a few years ago and I had never seen a car that color now I swear I see ten of them a day. I got my corgi last year and I noticed that there is one at each end of our street, I have lived in this house for ten years but hadn't noticed before I got my own.

Yesterday I met a woman who had her corgi shipped from Australia. This is weird, considering that there's not so many of them there.
I guess it's not as popular because not so many people know about the breed yet. Even here, in North Carolina people ask me "what kind of dog is that?". Nevertheless everyone falls in love with my puppy.
I am pretty sure that they will be gaining popularity for their cuteness, size and activity level.

G'day Kay, I have lived in Melbourne Australia for 4 years, I have to say Corgis are more popular down in Victoria, they are almost non existent in Queensland or Perth, I met my first corgi in Australia, it belonged to my home economic teacher, ever since then I was bitten by the corgi bug :)

I believe there are other members on here from Australia.

I have not been to Australia and have no idea why there is a Corgi shortage there, I do think it is a pity. I can't imagine life without my Corgis.
