Why do some people think that Corgis are mixed with other breeds?

So we went to Petsmart this afternoon to get some cat food and dog treats, and we took Tegan with us. They were having adoptions today and I overheard some of the people working it talking about my Tegan and saying she was definitely a Sheltie/ Corgi mix! I just stood their thinking to myself " How could you think my baby is anything other than a Corgi? She is the epitome of a Corgi!" This also happened to my male, Beauregard, when he was a puppy. That time the person was so sure he was a Jack Russell mix and I had to explain to her that "No he isn't a Jack Russell. He is a purebred Corgi." I personally was a little offended, but that's just me... Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Beauregard is a total Corgi!

Tegan is still growing into her corginess, but is still definitely a Corgi!

I also had a little boy call him a "dog-cat" and another kiddo in my neighborhood called him a really big, short Chihuahua. I had to laugh! The kids always act confused!

I had a guy ask me if Grover was a Yorgi. I think he was just confused all around. :)
Your pups are adorable and all Corgi!

I have a blue merle Cardigan and trust me, It is worse. I have literally had people argue with me that he is not a purebred dog. Short of carrying his AKC papers with me everywhere, I just decided to let them think whatever they want......crazy, but it isn't a very common breed. Maybe I should get business cards made up for them to google at home later.. : )

I get comments on Rocky my blue merle all of the time! Is he an Aussie mixed with somethng else? When we have them all out togther we get asked are they Pembrokes or Welsh corgis? Some people just don't know that there are 2 types of corgis and that they are both Welsh! Your corgis are cuties!

I've gotten that too! It's SO annoying. One time someone said they think KC has a little Pomeranian in her. I was like "Uh, NO. There's is nothing fluffy or curly-tailed about my Corgi!!"

I've gotten that mix question too, and yes, I was slightly offended as well! They are not a very common breed in that you don't see too many of them walking around here anyway.

Well, I got asked if Yoda is a rabbit in Taiwan quite a few times. Usually, I tell them "Yes, he is the carnivore variety."

HR, you are right. I recently embarrassed myself by asking someone if their dog was a Pom/American Eskimo mix, because it was white but looked more like a Pom. Turns out it was a cream Pom. Beautiful dog and after looking again it was clearly all Pomeranian, but I've only seen them in shades of fawn and red, never white.

Usually people just tell me that Gonzo looks like a "miniature Lassie." Other times people can guess that he's a Corgi.
Beth, I have also tried to explain that they are all Welsh Corgies, someone once told me, "I had a Cardigan Corgi when I was younger, but not a Welsh Corgi like yours!" Still others have no idea what Gonzo is, but I don't blame them - before we got Gonzo, I had never heard of a Corgi.

OMG I know what you mean. People are so adamant too that Sky is a mixed dog. I've also gotten the "German Shepherd Mix." But to me, Corgis look like Corgis... *shrugs* I guess we just have to educate people on Corgis. ^_^
