Yesterday Joe, my parents, and I drove a little over three and a half hours to pick up Zorro (and as my parents like to say their first grandson from me). When we got there we were immediately greeted by two sweet corgis. It turns out the adult in the picture I posted with the puppies a few days ago is actually his brother. He is such a nice dog! When I was trying to look at the puppies he kept trying to get under my arms so I could pet him. The father his a nice little RHT and the mother is a BHT. All the puppies were obviously adorable! It's so hard to pick with 10 puppies running around! So one-by-one I started picking them up and seeing how they reacted, watch them interact with each other. Honestly I thought all the girls had wonderful little personalities. So playful! But we had decided on a boy and it came down to the two that I had posted a picture of. We had actually chosen and then I put him down to watch him play again and when I touched his back end he kind of yipped. So after more deliberation and a few puppy kisses we choose the other puppy (the one on the left). Then we had yet another three hour trip back home! For the first two hours Joe and I had him in the back seat with us. He insisted on sitting on the middle console with his head up against the back. Then when we had about an hour left we decided to put him in the kennel. He cried for about half an hour and then quieted up realizing we weren't taking him out.

We got home around 8pm, I put out some water and food because it had been a while since he had a chance to eat. He didn't seemed too concerned about either (I had been letting him have water out of my, now his) water bottle throughout the trip. He's such a smart little guy! He adapted to drinking out of my bottle by me squirting water out immediately and he's SO alert. We had stopped at A&W to eat along the way and had him out of the grass and he was always perked up and looking around. Anyway, I let him sniff around the house and he was pretty much following Joe and I around. We took outside in the backyard and played with him for a while to tire him out. The cranes in the pond behind us initially scared him, but by the third time they were squawking he was more interested than anything. After we came back inside he fell asleep on Joe's leg while we watched some TV. At 9:30pm we decided to go to bed because I was SO worried about him upsetting the neighbors when we put him in his kennel for the night. I put him in his crate next to our bed and we got in and just waited for him to start crying, but it never came! I was holding my breath for probably ten minutes and finally realized he wasn't going to whine, it was amazing, I've never had a dog do that! Joe is a much lighter sleeper than I and was continually waking me up to tell me Zorro had made a noise haha. Finally around 2:30am he was actually moving around a bit so I thought he probably had to go potty. After all, he had been in his crate for five hours! So I brought him outside and he peed right away. I was a little worried because he hadn't pooped yet since we picked him up, but after he peed he laid across my feet and that was that. I brought him back in and popped him in his crate and got back in bed. This time we were not so fortunate and he started crying, I tried to ignore it but it was 2:30am and the neighbors were not going to be happy! So I took him out and he just laid down right next to me and the crate and went to sleep. I let him sleep for about ten minutes so he would get good and groggy. Then I carefully picked him up and set him inside his crate, got back into bed, and waited. This time he would make little annoyed whines but stopped quickly! I really hope tonight goes as well, and am so proud of him!

Today Zorro woke me up at 5am and I could tell it was more insistent of a whine than he just wanted to get out of his crate so I brought him outside and soon as I set him down he peed and pooped! I am so proud and am always torn between saying good boy while he's doing the deed and distracting him and waiting until he's done. Afterwards I brought him in and gave him a small treat, I don't want to feed him yet because I do NOT want him getting used to being fed at five in the morning! I knew he wasn't going back to sleep and to be honest I wasn't even tired, although I'm sure I will be later. I have five and a half hours of mosquito IDing to do with a professor, ugh. But now here we are, I'm typing up this blog about him and he's sleeping with his head in my lap. I am so incredibly happy with our puppy and super excited to start training him today! So far he's been responsive. I haven't tried any actual commands, but he does mouth a bit and he has started to pull on the carpet and his doggy bed. Every time he does that I put his rope toy against his mouth and he usually starts chewing on that and I say good boy. We had him in his crate with Joe's fleece Invader Zim blanket all night and he never touched that. We shall see how actual commands go :)

Thanks everybody! I am working on pictures, he just won't sit still haha. He's such a little cutie, now if only he'll stop mouthing! He probably thinks I'm crazy for continually stuffing a rope toy in his mouth lol.

One of the first commands I ever taught Chase was "go to bed" which is his crate.
With time your little Zorro will learn to love his crate as much as Chase does.
When my fiance and I get ready to go to bed we just tell Chase to "go to bed"and he goes right in and lays down. There have been several times when Chris and I stay up later than usual and Chase will go into his bed all on his own and lay down.
Congrats and Good Luck!!
Oh and did anyone mention pictures? We like pictures. LOL

Congrats, doesn't it feel wonderful knowing the long wait was completely worth it? They are extremely smart puppies, Story learned 'sit' the first morning we played. They learn bad habits as quickly as they learn good habits, so it's not too soon to start training, plus it's fun because you integrate it into your whole day and all your play time, too. Story was not too interested in food or treats the first week, but now (3rd week) she loves it all! I'm so excited for you! :)
