So it's the stormy season in Florida. Winston is just over a year old now and apparently, without really realizing it, last year around this season, the weather was rather mild. Now the stormy weather is in full swing. To be totally honest, I love heavy downpours and thunderous cracks, complete with lightening, but obviously Winston doesn't share my opinion.
I'm not sure why but he is downright terrified of rain, let alone thunder. When it starts to rain, he begins to whine. Once it begins to pour and thunder, he begins to tremble something fierce. And whine more often. He really just wants to burrow down in my lap but I know that coddling him will encourage him to be more fearful, right?
I feel awful since I know he's so scared, but I don't know what to do. I've tried standing on the back porch with him, but he just cows and trembles and tries to pry his way inside the door. I've also tried leaving the screen doors open so he could "smell the changes in weather" because someone told me that if he could smell the air, he might not be afraid. He doesn't like to smell the rain, I guess! I don't really know what to do for him and it breaks my heart to watch him looking so terrified.
Any advice would be great. I honestly don't even know why he got to be so scared in the first place. The only thing I can think of is under exposure last year, which is rather unfortunate since we live in Florida.
