Well, today I got Ella's AKC papers in the mail and when I was looking them over, I noticed that her mom and dad both had the same mother.  Is this natural?  I'm not familiar with inbreeding of animals.  I was always under the impression that this was not a good thing.  I hate to admit this, but I didn't ask alot of questions when I went to get Ella.  I was looking for a pet/companion and not a dog for show or breeding and as soon as I spotted her, I fell in love.  Of course I would never, ever take her back but I was just wondering if she could have health problems because of the inbreeding or is this something that is done regularly?

Line breeding does happen quite frequently in dogs, but I think having the same mother is a bit close...I'm no expert though. Luke has a couple dogs that appear multiple times in his 3 gen pedigree but they are more spaced out.

Thanks for your reply, Jane.  It eases my mind somewhat to know that it's not so uncommon.

While linebreeding is common, breeding half-siblings is unusual.   Sometimes if someone is trying to develop a whole new breed they will go that close, but not usually with a well-established breed like a Corgi.   Usually what you might see is that the maternal grandfather is the same as the paternal great-great grandfather, or something like that.   More like cousins than siblings.

I'm looking at Maddie's now for instance and her mother's father is the same dog as her father's mother's father.   And her father's father is the same dog as her father's mother's mother's father.   Got that?  LOL      In other words, Maddie's grandsire on the dam side is the same as a great-grandsire on the sire's side.    And the sire's father is also the sire's great-grandsire on the dam's side.   You don't usually see much closer than that, to the best of my knowledge.

Whew!  That's alot to digest, LOL!  Kidding aside, I appreciate your input.  I "think" I got it all.  :)   I just hope that her breeder knew what he was doing.  She sure seems like a wonderful little girl.  Thank you so much for replying!
