We just got our first puppy about a week ago. His potty training is going very well, he already sits by the door when he needs to go out and if he in in his kennel he cries and we take him out at night. But we are having some trouble also. He is hardly ever alone throughout the day. I work during the day so my boyfriend watches him and then I watch him in the evening when he goes to work. So someone is always playing with him or taking care of him at all hours of the day. But it seems just when one of us needs to do something in the house that doesn't involve him (cleaning, cooking etc) he pees on the rug or somewhere else on the floor. Even if we had just taken him out five minutes before that. Is he doing this because we aren't paying attention to him?? Any suggestion?

Do you pay attention to him after he pees? Or talk to him in any way? My pembroke who is 6 months now, used to do something similar. If he wanted to play, and i was laying down, or relaxing would pee on the floor right in front of me because he knew i would have to get up and clean it and therefore i wouldnt fall asleep. when he does this just be careful that nothing positive or no attention to him comes after the accident. They are incredibly fast at recognizing sequences, and he may be doing it to toy or test you. hope this helps

When he does it we usually say "NO" and ask him what he did. And then take him outside. He knows what he did because he will run and hide afterwards. Is there something else we shoud be doing instead?

Hi Kelly, read this, than this. Good luck!

Simple mantra for house-training puppies: too much freedom coming too soon equals accidents. Whenever you are busy with ANYTHING other than actively keeping your hands and eyes on your puppy, he's either in his crate, or tied to you on a leash. If you leave him to his own devices, he can and probably will evacuate somewhere in the house. And why not, from his point of view - it's close by, it's comfortable, and it feels so good! Every time he pees or pooes indoors, he is rewarding himself, so the behavior can get out of hand pretty quickly.

Thank you all for your help! I will keep in mind everything on the lists. I think that sometimes though, he does it strictly for attention. Because he does love it! Even if we are sitting at the computer, like I am now, he will do it. (And I just came back inside from having him out for an hour)
