Just to be on the safe side.....Juno has been eating lots of junk on walks and i haven't found a way to stop him and i'm tired of constantly pulling on his harness. =.=' (your advice to help distract his crap eating would also be great!) So I've searched around and some say pet insurance is good while others say you should just save up the monthly amount given to the insurance companies. However, saving like 500 a year and add a few years together may still not be enough for one use or will be used up at once. I'm considering saving and also pet insurance and was wondering what everyone thought and or what you do? Insurance? savings? both?

Here are the insurance companies that I've found to be good(please feel free to provide your opinions/experiences w/ them) much appreciation! :)

-VPI(breeder rec.)
-Trupanion (vet rec.)
-Petplan
-Petsbest

At this point, i'm leaning towards Trupanion/Petplan.

Thanks!

UPDATE: 6/3

I'll try to call Petplan when i get a chance. Anyone know what is a gd annual payout max? 8,000/yr bronze on petplan, would that be enough?

I've also gone out to search for a martingale but they didn't have a small for him so I ended up getting gentle leader; hope it works. I plan to use it temp. until he gets used to not eatin on the floor then i will switch him back to possible a martingale/reg. collar & leash. Other than gentle leader, my other choice was a mesh harness similar to easywalk where it tighens on the side/body when pulled but I've heard that it's bad for their shoulders because of the way it's positioned?

Will update all on everything again soon! :) wish me luck on the new walks w./ gentle leader..i've heard it does great w/ big dogs...not sure about little ones! :D

UPDATE: 6/8

I've decided on petplan & as to Juno's walks. He's been doing a tad bit better...also w/ the help of him going to his first puppy class so now he's starting to get his name down and "leave it" better. I use leave it w/ the help of treats and the gentle leader & he's been doing OKAY ok walks. The only thing i'm trying to figure out now is him refusing to walk in certain directions i go in...he just plants his feet and i have to trick him to walk over w/ a treat and once he eats the treat he plants his feet again. but we're going day by day! :) thanks for everyones help!

Anna is right , my Carly is a big fan of cat poo, and has a nose like a beagle... she can smell it as far back as the length of a house.. seriously, i see her nosing in and i get a good tight grip shorten her lead, hold on to frankie, (who hasnt got the drive she does) watch very closely say leave it and when she minds me i treat her ...if she gets it in her mouth ive even opened and dug it out if she doesnt swallow it first! ..ugh..not fun!

She wontdrop cat poo, its to Delicious to her..

i shall be the garbage eating radar. hahaha! i've put him on gentle leader and it's been a tad bit better

I have my pup on Banfield's wellness plan, I pay $39 a month and it covers all of his visits plus includes neutering. I get 15% on other procedures if they are necessary. I guess it's not really insurance but it allows me to take him in anytime I need to, especially because he is still a puppy.

I would also teach him the command "LEAVE IT." I taught him this command and he will walk away from whatever it is when I tell him to leave it.

Speaking of dogs finding food on the ground. I read somewhere (I think it was the ASPCA site) that one way to entertain your dog would be to sprinkle his kibble out on the grass in your yard. It seems to me that it would encourage them to eat things they shouldn't. Has anyone done this type of scavenger hunt?

seems like a really bad idea, every time they go out, they will be hunting for treats!!

I've heard bad ideas before, but this one takes the cake!

Really? Got a link to the article?

I saw it on the ASPCA site under Virtual Behaviorist- Enriching Your Dog's Life. http://www.aspcabehavior.org/articles/65/Enriching-Your-Dogs-Life.aspx

It says: Hunting for dinner You can make your dog hunt for her meals by hiding stuffed food puzzle toys or small piles of her kibble around your house. Hide one of your dog’s meals right before you leave her home alone, and she’ll have great fun hunting her chow while you’re away. To try a variation on this activity, scatter a couple handfuls of kibble around your yard so your dog can search for the pieces in the grass. Most dogs love this game!

I guess even experts say stupid things in print sometimes.

There is no doubt that this will relieve boredom, in the same way as cutting off your head will take care of a headache, or taking certain drugs for a minor problem has a  list of side effects that includes death ( in commercials with lovely scenery, soothing music and smiling people with flowing hair...).  Common sense helps to be one's own expert, you may not get it right, but you'll never get it quite as wrong either :-DD

As you said, it's mainly for big expenses. If you're looking to save on regular, everyday stuff look around for a veterinary discount program.

I have a gentle leader that Snickers did well with, my other two hate it. Jack will walk by using his right paw to try to take it off then taking a step while the left paw swipes at his nose. Very comical, but slow. Dolly will walk a while then suddenly decide she is getting out of it and jump and squirm like a  landed fish. I don't think it will work well for keeping Juno's head up. You can take it back if is doesn't work for you..

See the collar FAQ; I posted photos of my modified Martingales.

We lost a dog to choking, so I worry about the spare-rib and other cooked bones that piggy people throw out of their cars.  Gwynnie dug up a wicked-looking, very chokable carp vertebra at Green Lake.  You just have to watch.
