Reading over some of the older posts, I see a lot of people talking about giving their corgis apples, bananas, peas, etc. I  am curious as to what fruit/veggies your corgis really like? And how much and how frequently? Applesauce will be 1 year next month and I would really like to incorporate some real food into her diet, she eats Blue Buffalo 1/2 cup twice daily.  Oh! And someone mentioned meat loaf? Anyone have any recipes they would like to share?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Bananas, carrots, lettuce, apples, blueberries.  Just keep the proportion of veggies to food low, and introduce it gradually; it can cause some loose stools because dogs' digestive tracts are short and don't have time to break the veggies down completely.   With perhaps the exception of some anti-oxidants, I'm not really sure how many nutrients dogs get from produce; they are more of a way to keep calories low.

If you want to add real food that will give her nutritional benefit, try:

Plain unsweetened yogurt

Cottage cheese

Tinned fish (sardines, salmon, mackerel)

Scrambled egg

Small amounts of plain cooked chicken or beef.

Replace a tablespoon or so of kibble with an equal calorie portion of any of the above.  For instance, an egg has about 70 calories, so I will give my dogs half an egg each.  At 35 calories, I only need to reduce their kibble by about 10% for the whole day to make up for it, so I don't worry about nutrient imbalances.

Your baby will love you for these treats. Start small with just a few to see what your baby likes. At my house the dogs sit by the rabbit pen waiting for the carrot nub to fall out of the bars. Big hits fo us. peeled apples, blueberries, sweet potatoes  blackberries, halfed red grapes( Seedless) pineapple, and fresh salad if it has a little Ranch dressing on it. Fried Chicken Liver for special teats I get a pound in the deli.

Grapes and raisins are poisonous to dogs and can cause death. I had a friend whose dog got into a little snack pack box of raisins and died.

Thank you I have never given him more than 1/2 . I looked it up and nothing explains why, but most of the guotes were about a dog eating a lot. I will stop letting him have them to be safe. You know when I was young we had a springer spaniel, She never had dog food, mom made her a plate each meal from the table. Gretchen lived to be17 and never went to the vet. I gave all of her shots at home.

Also, we used to just crack an egg (raw) on the floor and let them go to town! :) Dogs love eggs, shell and all!

Baxter and Ziggy love fruits and veggies. Everything everyone listed-- blueberries, green beans, sweet potato, carrots, apples, etc. I just started giving them little pieces of asparagus and tomato and they love that too. Using these in place of treats is really nice too. You can dry some fruits out in your oven and store them for later.

Simon and Copper both love pumpkin, bananas, frozen green beans (straight from the freezer) and plain non-fat yogurt. An occasional fried egg also makes its way into their bowls once and awhile. Along with the above items, they get 1/3 cup Natural Balance sweet potato/fish twice a day. They both lost around 3-4 lbs.

Tomahawk will happily eat any vegetable you give him. If I have the time, I like making him a vegetable stew that includes squash, cabbage, celery, carrots, corn, peas, and broccoli. He LOVES his stew.

He isn't a big fan of fruits, which I find really surprising since he seems to have a sweet tooth ( blame it on my grandpa), but he will eat an occasional banana or orange slice.

Experiment and see what he will happily eat, just make sure to always check that whatever you feed him is safe for your corgi pup.

Poopdeck's main treat are carrots.  Unfortunately we give them to him quite often(just cuz he's so cute).  It's kind of fun to chuck peas and beans across the room when he is facing the other direction, it's amazing what those ears pick up.  We save them as treats and not a staple, as many people do.

bananas, strawberries and baby carrots. Baron also eats Blue Buffalo.
