This has been a long and draining day for me. Dante got attacked and I got bitten by a stray dog while walking this afternoon. I've never seen Dante react like that! The second he realized the dog bit me he freaked. He looked like he would have chased that dog to the end of the earth! I had to carry him the rest of the way home, whle the owner of the dog stood by and watched without saying a word. I called animal control immediately, but for some reason, after them driving around for 45 minutes, the dog is still sitting out there!! Dante is ok, and after a long ER visit, I am too. Lots of antibiotics, antiseptic cleaners, and all that jazz. I'm calling them again tomorrow about that dog, I very much want to make sure it doesn't have rabies!
This is the exact same dog that Pippa did such an amazing job of ignoring this morning. I'm worried that if things like this keep happening, Dante will have a permanent distrust of other dogs. Especially now that we don't have a single safe area to walk the dogs without driving somewhere (not very realistic with 3 small children).

I'm sorry to hear that you had a such a scary incident. I am amazed by our sweet owners, like you, who are more worried about how something will affect their corgi than their own physical well-being. I hope you can get Dante into some positive situations with other dogs soon. You can't erase what happened with this particular dog but you can wallpaper over it with good interaction maybe. Good luck!
thank you. the way I see it, my foot will heal, but he has a real emotional scar now. It has been 2 months since the other dog attack on the next block over, and he still hadn't gotten over it, but I'm not going to give up.
Ouch! :( So sorry that you had to go through that! Hopefully animal control will pick up the dog and have it checked out.
The dog is still sitting in its front yard, and there were kids playing out there all day. I keep hoping none of them get bit as well.
Yikes! Corgis can be protective, that's for sure. I think Maddie would have run off but pretty sure Jack would have freaked out on the other dog. The breeder we got them from said she was at a show once and a loose Chow charged her. Her male Corgi grabbed the Chow by the neck and would not let go til the Chow's owner showed up.
That's a nasty gouge and feet are a bad spot. You saw my post about my Mom. Please watch it carefully for any swelling, redness, or red lines traveling away from the site and watch your temp. Go back at the slightest sign of infection.
Hope you and Dante are both ok.
I know you aren't supposed to get in the middle of dogs fighting, but Dante had pulled out of his collar and I was terrified that the dog would run and Dante would chase after him. The last time we had a dog attack us, Dante had peed himself and tried to run away. This time was a complete 180. He very well could have hurt that dog if I hadn't picked him up.
Sorry to hear this! I would suggest carrying pepper spray with you since it sounds like you are having to deal with loose dogs a lot. Keep calling animal control, and if they don't do anything about it call the police. This dog is clearly a bite risk. Get treated for rabies, the only way to test for rabies is to kill the dog and cut off its head, unless the owner can prove vaccine history. The rabies series isn't any big deal these days, just 3 (or 4 don't remember) shots, spaced a few weeks apart, nothing like the horror it used to be. I'd get treated just to be safe since at this point you don't know vaccine history. Its very unlikely the dog has rabies but I sure wouldn't want to find out the hard way considering rabies results in death pretty much 100% of the time. I'd suggest calling friends who have friendly dogs and setting up play dates or maybe contacting MyCorgi members in your area to help Dante get over this situation and see that not all dogs are scary and bad.
My area of Texas does 3-5 days of quarantine for dogs that bite/attack, and if no signs of rabies appear, they either return it to the owner, or euthanize it. The rabies series itself doesn't worry me, just the $5000 price tag that comes with it.
I hope I can keep this from causing a lasting issue with him. He's still ok with some larger dogs, and has no problems with other corgis, but ANY smaller dog sets him off now. It's almost like he has a panic attack at the sight of them :(
that time may be old....it's 10 days now... TX state law.
that is the time frame that the responding patrol officer gave me. I know that it is 10 days, but he didn't seem to think so.
ah geez.....soooo, now you've got a couple of senarios
1. either the dog is owned by a city council man or police chief's brother.
2. it's possible that the shelter is entirely too small and they can't fit the dogs in....
Either way the law is the law....
Now, you can throw the law in their face and tell them that, BUTTTTT you have to live in that neighborhood and that town, and you are the only one who can decide what to do.
It's a hispanic family that claims to speak no english. A large portion of our police department speaks spanish as well, so I don't see why that is holding anything up.
