Frosty has been chewing and gnawing all over himself constantly for the past couple of weeks.  He's been digging in his pants so hard he makes himself yelp and it bleeds :(

He doesn't have any bug infestations and the skin looks totally normal.  I have no idea what is causing him to be so itchy except that it has been around 100 degrees and hasn't rained here for about 3 months now.

Do you have any recommendations for ways to make him un-itchy?  His vet was no help at all.  I tried bathing him with the super-conditioning/anti-itchy oatmeal shampoo, but that didn't help at all.  I tried putting bacon grease on his food, he won't eat it (ya, he is weird lol).  Not sure what else to try...

UPDATE AUGUST 12th:

Ok, finally made it to the farm store today and we are all hooked up.  Picked up some medicated shampoo specially formulated for dry itchy skin, dog allergy tabs, salmon oil for dogs to put on his food and pigs ears (made in the USA) just in case some extra collagen might help.  And it is finally raining.  If all this doesn't help, I'll be taking him in to see the vet instead of just talking to them over the phone!

UPDATE AUGUST 30th:

After trying everything I could think of, Frosty ended up breaking out in hives yesterday and scratching a giant sore into his belly, so off to the vet today.  Conclusion = he is allergic to something.  (ya, duh right? that's what I thought!)  Vet gave him a shot of cortisone, and now we have to wait to see if that will help.  Poor guy :(

It is absolutely not fleas.  That was my first thought as well, but there are no fleas on him, I thoroughly checked through all his fur (for like an hour, he was not pleased lol) and he doesn't have any hot spots.  He is treated with Frontline every month and we have never missed a dose.  I also checked the 3 house cats and both our outside cats and could not find any trace of fleas on anybody.

You can give dogs benadryl or claritin/zyrtec but check with your vet on the dosage.

I found this thought it might help your problem or give some kind if answers.

Thanks, that had some helpful answers!

the lady in the post was feeding her poor dog Ol' Roy - rated one of the worst dog foods out there- the cheap junk Wal Mart sells for hicks who don't care about the old hound dogs lounging on the front porch and layin under the junk cars in the front yard.

I do NOT feed Frosty Ol' Roy lol

I can't imagine anyone on mycorgi using such a cheap food for their dogs.

Your welcome I hope it helps. I don't feed my dog the brand either lol

Well I tried out some benedryl and fish oil on him tonight.  He actually ate the giant fish oil gel pill like it was a treat!  Gross!! lol!  I am concerned that it is a reaction to his recent vaccinations, but it might also be the new homemade pumpkin dog treats I started feeding him last month.  I am going to stop giving him those as well.

I was going to suggest Fish oil.  My family's 15 year old mix, Hershi started taking it about 4 years ago, and it, I believe, has very much improved her life.  She used to itch all the time, so we tried it.  It worked.

herky was "chewing" his paws to the point where the skin was red and looked painful. he was chewing on the top where the skin is, not the pad. I took him to the vet and he thought it was allergies. He put him on a round of antibiotics to prevent infection, prednisone for a month gradually tapering off for the itch, a 2 month supply of hydroxyzine for the itching, and some dermacool spray for immediate relief. Thankfully it started working immediately. I am hoping this is a one time thing although the vet did say we could be in for allergies every year, just like people.

Think about what's changed recently.  Food changes?  Weather or seasonal  changes?  Possibly a new allergy to some plant or pollen that's just come into season?
