Lately Ziggy has been licking a LOT-everything and anything! At first it wasn't really a big deal- I figured that dogs lick sometimes, but it's been quite a few days now and it's really starting to take a toll on my nerves, hearing him smacking his chops non stop.. Sounds like I'm living with someone that doesn't know how to chew gum with their mouth closed, and ALWAYS has a fresh supply of freaking Bazooka.

I am slowly starting to go insane.... Telling him "NO." doesn't work.. Putting my hand in front of whatever he is licking doesn't work.... Even having him in his cone doesn't work-he licks the cone!! I can't take it anymoreee!

To top off all of this, he sheds so much that his fur is EVERYWHERE and so whenever he licks something, he is of course, eating it...... And that is how I've woken up to him twice choking-ish and then throwing up fur balls... Here kitty kitty..

Tips to make this stop? Is there any reason I should be concerned? He has a vet appointment this Friday, so if there is, I'll bring it up with her.

Thanks.

Griffin was licking his feet a lot and scratching--he's now on rx for allergies.  You're right--it's totally annoying!

Have you checked to make sure nothing is stuck in his teeth?

I checked after you suggested, and nope! All is normal on the teeth front!!

Hey there! D'Arby has been doing the same thing for like the past month. Do you think he and the Zigster might be suffering from NH seasonal allergy? Some sort of creepy pollen looking stuff down here in Contoocook. He is also itchy. Also, dogs sometimes smack and lick when their tummies are upset so maybe Zig and D'Arby fur ball issues are contributing. Let me know what your vet says on Friday. I know the Darbster has springtime allergies and you couple that will eating anything on the floor that's not nailed down, it is hard to trace down dietary issues. By the way, speaking of Bazooka, D'Arby got hold of a pack of sugarless gum a week or so ago. He seems to be recovered after eliminating all of the packaging with the gum. It's like having a toddler again! (:0)

It's pretty possible that it is allergies, but that doesn't explain why he's licking EVERYTHING!! Haha.. Geeze, Corgis seem to like living dangerous hahaha.. Gum, bah!! I struck out pretty lucky in the sense that I can leave yummy smelling spaghetti on a bed less than a foot away from Ziggy's face, leave the room and come back and he hasn't moved any closer to it at all! Just sits there staring like "I'm such a good boy.. Don't you wanna share with me?" so even if I did happen to leave some out he'd ignore it.. Which is probably a good thing, as I'm such a ditz that I leave things everywhere all the time >.< BOOOO!

I would discuss this with the Vet, especially since the behavior is relatively new.  My guess is that there is a physical basis to it that needs to be addressed and that it is not just behavioral.

Okay, I will bring it up with her then :)

Anna is right. Liking could be either physical , like nausea and other gastro-intestinal related illness, seasonal allergies  or it could be because he has some anxiety , hes bored etc. Trip to the vet could help you figure witch one it is :)

Yikes.. Gastro-intestinal sounds bad :( Really hope it isnt anything serious... I will definitely talk with his vet tomorrow.. Blaaaaaaaaaaaah.. Fingers crossed!!

Dr. Sheldon Cooper. I love it. What a hoot!

In the meantime, til the vet appt, have you tried spraying bitter apple on the areas that he's licking. I know the licking can be very annoying & hope the vet can help you figure out what's triggering the behavior.

No, I haven't tried---is it safe to use on carpet?? He will lick the whole carpet.. And our bed/bedding.. Pillows... Whatever is near his face basically!! Also his cone!
